Do you think Nelson will be the starter game 1 next year?

He doesn't look any better than Gray or Shortell to me. We need a lot of playmakers on offense to all of a sudden appear next year, and maybe a brand new QB as well. I don't think anyone is guaranteed the job, but likely it will be Nelson. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Hopefully with about 20 walk-ons. Definately a weak position on the team. Granted I just want Shorty throw another awful interception.

I would hope he'd be better in year 2. I mean before Barker got hurt he looked like a very legit QB so it's hard to say where the problem lies in the Offense...

He had one good game, against a bad Purdue team. Shorty had one good game too. Gray sort of had one good game. I'd actually start Gray in the Bowl Game. He's a senior and its not like Nelson is more likely to lead us to a win.

Start with Limegrover. His offense is mediocre at best. He can blame the injuries, but it is his responsibility to get the job done.

Nelson is the starter on paper I would think but I don't think he has done anything in 6 games to say there is no way anyone could take it from him during fall camp.

Nelson looked better in his first game at Wisconsin than he has the last two.

He's Kill's guy and will start. I am not sure that Shortell will be here next year, as he can sit and still play 2.

Yeah, because his offense had so many weapons in fact he had so much talent it was unbelievable.

Nelson is not our QB right now to save this season. We are in rebuilding mode and this is the best decision long term.

Keep in mind Nelson lost a plethora of snaps the first half of the season; the kid will be find, just give him some time. Defensive coordinators have tape on him and have made adjustments; the U will counter in the off season and Nelson will be find. I really like this kid.

Right now, we don't have either a B10 level QB or RB (despite how hard our guys run - they have ben giving it their all for several years, but lack the size, speed and talent).

I don't think we have any B10 level Wide Receivers either, and the OLine is questionable. So that would contribute to him not looking as good. My only worry is that he looks slower than Gray and can't pass as well as Shory and neither of them are top end either. I don't doubt the only reason they burned the red shirt is because he was the best QB in practice, so we'll just have to give him time...

Unless we change what we do on offense Nelson will be the QB.

I think it should be open competition. I also think that Nelson is the favorite.

Let's see how he is with more first team snaps through bowl practice, the bowl game, spring practice, and fall practice. He's absolutely not there now, but there was a reason we were so desperate to keep his redshirt: we knew he wasn't ready this year.

Like Sparlimb said: maybe if he had a receiving corps to stretch the field... and a healthy O-line to give him some time... and a potent running back to get the tough yards and take the pressure off him...

People need to stop flipping out on this guy. Seriously. That time will come, just be patient!

In Kills tenure at Minnesota, the QB position has never been "won." He assigns a player to the position based on whom he would like to be the starter/develop. No doubt other coaches do the same thing on occasion; however when it doesn't work out I believe the coach should take extra heat because they preach competition and this goes directly against that.

With that being said; I believe Nelson will be okay. Everything I hear Nelson is the real deal. Folks need to keep in mind this kid was asked do something most aren't; assume the starting position of the toughest position on the field in the middle of a season he was supposed to red shirting.

Looks to me like he is very inaccurate on long and out throws. Decent across the middle. I do not think he has the strongest arm around either. I do not think he is a sure bet. He has time to try to work it out.

He'd better be the starter or Kill totally blew the call on the redshirt.

There is no way in hell, Shortell a Big Ten starting QB with 3 years to play 2 will step onto the field to play backup to a kid all but assured he will be the starter for at least next season.

Shortell will have plenty of opportunities to play elsewhere at a quality football program....dudes gone after this semester.

I wonder if Brewster will give him a call.....

Maybe. He could outplay Nelson this spring and win the starting job. Again, I don't see anything myself, in Nelson that guarantees him the job next year.

There won't be a open competition. Nelson took one for he team in allowing his red shirt to be removed. He deserves to be given every opportunity next season. Also, he will be the only experienced QB on the roster on opening day....Shortel will be somewhere else.

I'm sure Nelson will be the starter, but holy cow has he gone BACKWARDS in a big way since his second game. He has looked really, really bad most of the time in the past few games.

Nelson lacks quickness and seems to have difficulty getting away from rushers.
McDonald is going to be a quality receiver.

A true Freshmen starting in the middle of the season....learning and at times switching in and out at QB with Gray....remember the Purdue game? Of course he will be our starting QB next year. He will only get better!

Nelson has regressed a ton, but he's also played against some pretty good defenses (WI, MI, Nebraska, and MI State) with walk-on, injured, and/or freshmen receivers, an avg starting RB and a true freshman rb, and a collection of out-manned, mostly banged up, young, and or/walkon offensive linemen.

My hope is that these next 15 practices allows him to catch his breath, settle down, and get back to basics (and regain some accuracy).

Shortell is sufficient as a backup, but, unfortunately (he seems like a good kid), is not a Big Ten starter in this offense.
