Do Gopher hoops fans really have it so bad?

After watching the Vikings fall to 0-3, it got me to thinking. As Gopher basketball rubes, in hindsight, do those of us who frequent here really have much to stress about when it comes to how our favorite Minnesota team is performing?

Yes, the Gophers' Big Ten regular season (8-10) was a major disappointment, especially after the great start to the season, but are things really that bad considering the Gophs won a NCAA Tournament game for the first time in 16 years? Are we as Gopher hoops fans so fussy that we should consider a trip to the Round of 32 a "What have you done for me lately?" kind of performance? If my math is correct, the Round of 32 has only happened seven times in the Gophers' history. ... 1972, 1982, 1989, 1990, 1994, 1997, and 2013. ... with two of those having asterisks, if you're so inclined.

I give you:

The Vikings? Coming off a wildcard loss last season, now 0-3 with no sign of the playoffs in sight.

The Wild? Spent major $$$$ for two really good players, and the early results brought a 4-1 series loss in the conference quarterfinals.

The Timberwolves? Haven't made the playoffs in Lord knows how long, though I must say that appears to be a reasonable goal in 2013-14.

The Twins? Pewwwwwwww. Mostly a Minor League roster with perhaps the most nondescript starting rotation in the history of MLB. This franchise won't sniff the playoffs for at least another 3-4 years.

The Lynx? It's neat what they're doing, but. ... if a tree falls in the woods, does it make a sound?

Yes, it will be difficult for the Gophers to get back to the NCAA tourney in 2013-14, but I don't think it's a huge stretch to think they can. Maybe we don't have it so bad if we look at the rest of the local sporting landscape. Tubby did some good things here before things started turning the wrong way in his 4th season, but I'm strangely confident that Little P -- once he gets his feet wet in the Big Ten -- can make the Gophers more relevant in the Big Ten.

Lehigh, you're on the clock.

Say what you want about Clem but not a bad run from
89-97 besides the final 4 an elite 8 appearance included.

Not as bad as things look or have looked for the other local squads but the new coach is such a question mark at least a few seasons before anyone knows what type of coach he will be.

I always thought Gopher Basketball was the best game in town, win or lose. At one time, and hopefully again, we were considered a relatively small group, but the most knowledgeable and loyal fans in town.

Side note to SS: The Twins parade starts in 2015.

I hope you're right Howie, but I'm not buying that bag of goods yet. They'll deluge us with Buxton/Sano hope for the future (as they should), but not biting until they prove they're willing to form some semblance of a competent starting staff.

Trevor May, Alex Meyer, and Kohl Stewart seem to be their attempt at a future solid rotation. Sure you could add Gibson and Wimmers, but I'm kind of down on Gibson after this year.

Though, you got to admit, they are setting themselves up nicely for the start of the "Buxton/Sano era", dropping contracts to lower the payroll so they can surround the two with talent. I agree with Howie, party starts in 2015.

"In the land of the blind, the one-eyed Jack is King."

The Round of 32 was swell and all but was tough to be gung-ho knowing that both coaches were sacked the following Monday. It didn't do much to erase the malaise of finishing 9th in league called the Big 10 (out of 12 teams) and the first out in Conference Tourney.

Yes, yes we do. Minnesotan fans deserve better than the crap we are getting nowadays. Can you blame me for watching the lynx now? I mean, it's really the only team with a shot to win.

I bet you meant 7th didn't you.

Maybe we don't have it so bad relative to the other teams, Twins, Vikings, Wolves, but some of us have had a taste of what it feels like to be on top of the conference. Mind you, just a taste, but it was exhilarating. We long for that feeling again. I guess that's what being a fan is. Also, hope usually springs eternal when a new coach takes over.
