Last night's game proved just one thing, how very badly this team has been coached.

Despite three quite solid years of recruiting we have the following situation. Our offensive line can't pull and five linemen can't stop a three man rush. Terrible grasp of basic techniques will do that. The defensive line and linebackers don't have the basics of playing their positions either. The production from these positions is frightening. They cannot shed a block and they cannot tackle. The secondary? Not even God knows where they might be when a pass goes down field. The receiver might be triple covered or not have anyone within 15 yards. The only position that demonstrates having been well coached is the receivers. They, in turn, are handicapped by a QB that makes some great throws then throws it in the dirt or over the heads of the next five open receivers. The only question is the running backs. With no blocking who can tell?

This is nothing but a squad of pretty good athletes that have been poorly coached or not coached at all. Frankly, Brewster and his staff have let each of these young men down and done so big time!

Are you really sure about that. Or could it be the talent is just not there.

There are players playing out of position on the defense and O-line lacks stamina

There are huge issue's on this football team at this point in time from a personnel standpoint and speaks to being terribly thin at many positions. This indicates that recruiting lacked "focus" and attention to detail there are far to many holes at this point in the program with this staff. As has already been said there was talent recruited and suited for the spread offense which is not run here anymore.

The talent cupboard is not bare, but there are some obvious holes that will need to be filled. Our offensive line has four seniors. That is a lot to replace and our current line they cannot hold there blocks for more than 1-2 seconds, we do not have guards that can pull, and we do not have running backs that can hit the hole that fast. Hard to sustain a consistent running attack when you lack conditioning and stamina in the line and cannot sustain blocks.

Defensive line does not play with consistent leverage(They play far to upright at tackle) or have good ball awareness. So many times they are so swallowed, engaged with the blockers, or so focused on the pass rush in taking there circle routes up the field, that they cannot react to the ball, shed down the line, or string things out and use the boundary as a weapon. Nobody appears to be able to shed a block and if they can, they get out of position in doing so. All of that stunting and movement lead to more confusion in the D line earlier and did not confuse the offense in the least.
The line-backing corps as a whole all seem out of position as a group and this is a group that has the most talent. The Gophers lack a true Mike backer right now to line people up.
Tinsley is out of position at the Mike, he should be a WILL or weakside linebacker where he can be used as a pash rusher, to disguise the rush, and play to more of his strength as a tackler in space. He get's swallowed up in the middle and they are getting a hat on him way to easy. Rallis is a natural strong side linebacker as he is good at reading the play, but being hurt that takes some of his ability to play fast, and penetrate in the backfield and react, away, this hurts our group. Cooper is completely out of position at linebacker, he would make a better strong safety which would play to his strength his speed and his ability to cut, twist and move. The ability to recover and come from a longer distance and close a lot of ground.

Having Cooper play linebacker allows for him to get caught up in all of the soup, or stuck chasing the QB as a last resort. His strength is not taking on a block and shedding it, it is covering people and closing fast on a tackle from a distance and filling a missed gap. He would be good at safety because you could funnel tackles to him and allow him to attack and close fast. That leave us with a hole at the MIKE. Beal sounds like he is a player in the middle but as a transfer he has to sit out. If they have a guy at the MIKE that can step up they should put that guy in and move everyone else. This would clean up a lot of the current mess in this group.

The secondary is not without talent in the current group but they are leaving 27 one on one in coverage to much. This is the area where we need the most help and might need some JC talent to replace some folks. Collado and Theret are seniors so this is 2 of 4 to replace for sure. Still don't like to see them play that far off but you do what you have to do I guess.

Good stuff

Very astute observations.
