Director's Cup the U is sitting 7th for 2012-2013.

Most stupid award in sports. If you are not winning in the revenue sports, you are not winning as a program and it is that simple.

Iowa-Iowa St Cyhawk trophy would like to speak with you.

I would say winning in the non-rev sports if the revenue sports aren't high-profile and bringing in super-high profits is even MORE impressive. Yes, our first wish as fans is that we win in football, basketball, and hockey (most would agree on the last one). But this is really great to see that the programs are clearly doing well in managing their budgets, hiring the right people, recruiting the right athletes, and that investments in all those 'wasteful' facilities for non-rev sports is paying off a little.

Keep in mind, when we go to the Olympics every other year and everyone gets the fever and starts chanting U-S-A, it isn't football carrying the torch. It's the track and fields, hockey, rowing, curling, skiing, wrestling (RIP), etc sports we're all tuning in to watch.

I hope qualifying for the Softball Tourney will bring us up a couple 13/14 notches.

Didn't we win enough in football, basketball, hockey, and wrestling to compete in post-season play? Wouldn't those be considered the big 4?

If you think a Big Ten team making the postseason in football and basketball is impressive I guess it's a success. Hockey was (as usual) the only real winner at the U in terms of the big three sports. Wrestling is not a revenue sport.

Who does this anymore? The Olympics have steadily become professional with dwindling national pride from both athletes and fans. Hell, you don't even have to be a a native of a given country to be on their team anymore. I watched a girl born and bred in Ohio play basketball for Russia last summer.

Why was this posted in the Football forum? Mods please move to here:

Still by far the minority of athletes. Yes, the Olympics are way overdone as a money grab by the IOC. Yes, professional athletes play sports like basketball, hockey, and a few others. But for the most part, the sports we all get excited about are the non-rev ones in college.

In any case, my original point was obviously that to be successful in 'everything else' we need our revenue sports to be as successful (on-field) as possible, driving revenue that can support the other guys. We shouldn't put the other priorities ahead of FB/BB/MH, but the fact that we're doing as well in them means we clearly have people at the top who can identify coaching talent, coaches who can recruit, and 'good enough' facilities in place to win in those sports. Which, IMO, is a good thing for the U and good for our society (just like having the Guthrie or a marching band that aren't revenue generators are good things).

It's about as meaningful as who wins the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.....yet ESPN shows a graphic and talks about it every 30 seconds during those games. No one cares.

LOL - When did you start to speak for me?

There was a game 3-4 years ago involving Michigan State where Musberger kept insisting that the Spartans were feeling big pressure because the Big Ten was down something like 5-3 in the challenge. It was so ridiculous at the time.

Just like now when some people want to say that it has no meaning.

As magpie stated
It's about school pride for the kids and fans.

May not be that big of a deal but there is no reason to dismiss it either. People watch the Olympics and appreciate it for what it is. But here some people think if it is not a top revenue sport it is just taking money away from the teams they are interested in. There are a lot of other people who don't necessarily agree with that.

I think the problem is under Macturi too much emphasis was placed on the Directors Cup, which has tainted it for some fans, but as alwayys proud of all the gopher athletes, just glad that it seems like we have an AD that sees the big picture.

People watch the olympics. They're not watching Gopher softball/rowing/soccer. There's no "lot of people".

I don't think it has to be an "either-or." Yes, we would like to see the U be more successful in the major revenue sports, but that doesn't mean we should ignore or belittle the accomplishments of the other sports programs at the U. When I pick up the paper and see a story about "Gophers Win B1G title," that makes me happy, regardless of what sport it's in. The U has a strong tradition in Wrestling, Baseball, Track and Field, Cross-Country, Volleyball, Swimming & Diving, and Golf, just to name a few.

Given a choice - would you rather have a program that was real good in FB, men's BB and Hockey - and stunk in everything else?

yes.

You had to stumble upon an article in the paper to find out we won a big ten title in one of the other sports. You don't care either.
