I could be wrong, but wasn't it reported late last week that Bruinicks said that they have their guy? Also wasn't it widely reported that Maturi had a 30 hour window when it would be done?
Now we here that Kill didn't speak with Mona/Maturi until Saturday?

It is possible that we had our guy and he had a last minute change of heart?

Not an anti-Kill thread, just a little confused about exactly how things went down.

One thing is pretty obvious: Kill wasn't considered until very late in the process.

Talking to Bowman, he said that he knew "earlier in the week". Not sure what that means.

Don't know if it is true or not, but there were some rumors that Edsall was set to take the job until he won the Big East. Who knows if that holds water and that was the coach that could have backed out?

It's obvious this was disaster on many levels. Kill not being contacted until Saturday is just further evidence of how we let a complete idiot make the most important decision in recent Gopher football history.

That's what I had heard as well...though I forget where I heard it, so it could very well be the same place you did.

Yes...and here he is....Jerry Kill's brother, Jason!

In his interview with Barreiro he says the first time he was contacted was Saturday...

Whether or not he was option #1 or option #344, he probably wouldn't have been in contact until saturday. His season was over on friday night. The entire reason for a search firm is so that they can contact his agents prior to saturday and so that he can say "I wasn't contacted until saturday" (when his season was over).

It would have been the exact same response you'd have gotten from Chris Petersen, Randy Edsall, or anyone who coached this weekend.

I didn't pay attention to when the MAC championship game was played, but Mr. Maturi should not have contacted Coach Kill until after that game as a matter of protocol. That is probably why Coach Kill never heard from him until Saturday.

Meanwhile, Maturi could have been talking to consultants, agents, AD's, other coaches, and anyone else to complete his due diligence and fill in his file on Coach Kill. Since resume material for a coach is readily available as a matter of public record, a resume is seldom necessary for an AD to determine if he wants to interview a coaching candidate.

I have no knowledge of whether there was a prior offer to anyone.

That is 100% accurate. Whether Kill was option #1 or #300, he wouldn't have been contacted until saturday.

So you're trying to tell us that NO coach would have been contacted--was contacted--at any time during the past two months?

I call BS.

I'm not ripping on you, but I don't think you follow college football (maybe outside of the Gophers) very much, or at least you aren't very knowledgeable about how these things go down. We may have been in contact with coaches prior to their season's being over but they would NEVER admit it, it just wouldn't happen. Coaches don't do that to their former players and employers. "Yeah, while you were preparing for the biggest game of your life, I was planning my move to MN". It just doesn't happen. So, of the employed coaches, there wouldn't have been one who would have admitted to being in contact with the U. I would guess there wouldn't have been any direct contact between the U and the coach either, it would have all stayed between the search firm and the coach's agent. It's how these things work at every school in the country.

If Chris Petersen or any other employed coach would have been hired they would have said the exact same thing about not being contacted until after the season was over. That I am certain about.

not NO coach....no coach who was still coaching his team this past weekend.....

(Referring to a meeting with Maturi): “I did have an informal conversation about an opening that’s out there,” Hoke told the San Diego Union-Tribune when asked about it after practice Tuesday (23 Nov).

And I'm not ripping on you, but I think you're being incredibly naive, or intentionally obscuring the situation to put the Kill hiring in a better light.

I'm guessing, off the top of my head, that Maturi met face-to-face with at least a half dozen coaches since Brewster was fired, probably more. That it didn't make the papers, or wasn't publicized, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

I don't think ADs make million dollar decisions based only on 'second hand contact through agents.' There's current speculation Edsall was offered, and accepted the job, only to change his mind later. Do you really think Maturi offered him the job without a face-to-face meet, probably more than one, and during which UConn was still playing?

In any case, what's obvious is that the primary reason Kill wasn't contacted until Saturday (which I believe by the way) is he was a panic hire that a desperate Maturi turned to very late in the process, not out of some sense of honor requiring him to hold off talking until the conference championship game. If that was the case, then all ADs would wait until after the bowl games, rather than pull the rug out from successful teams at this point of the season.

it was posted on GH that someone overheard or were told that Bruninicks alledgely said this to a booster at the basketball game. not really a "report" just another rumor.

They are saying in another thread that Edsall backed out.

When Kill was on with Barreiro, he said that at his interview, it was obvious that Maturi had done extensive research on him. Kill said something to the effect that "he knew more about me than I do."

I would guess that firms contact agents and agents talk to their clients and that dance likely goes on for awhile until there is a formal sit-down.
