If so, How! Plane or Buss?

Entire band or just a Pep Band?

They're going. I believe their flight leaves at 7:30 PM on Christmas Day.

And the U picks up the tab from the allotment of game tickets they need to sell, which the way it should be.

More importantly than the tickets, the cost of sending the band comes from the $1.5 million in travel expenses provided by the bowl and the conference - also the way it should be.

Different band Q.

Do we know yet where in the stadium the band will sit? Hoping it is right below us.

We will be in section 320 or 321

Yes, the Minnesota marching band will be in Sections 116/117. They will also do the Sota Social on Thursday. Last year they did a pre-game show on the plaza. I assume they will do the same this year.

What can we expect from the crafty band this year? I recall when the Gophers beat Alabama in a bowl game a few years back they had plenty of fun. Turns out the band played Rocky Top, and the Crimson Tide didn't care for that at all. Now, I think we have many Tennessee fans who like the Gophers.

I don't think the band can come up with something as clever as that for Syracuse, but you never know.

Never had 30,000 people give me the bird at once... good times. Some drunk Bama fans definitely tried to start something with us as we did a stadium march around after the game, too.

If only the State Fair Board would pick up the cost for the band, then the U could save the approx. $800K it costs to send the band to U of M Day at the Fair. ;)

Standing on my seat singing "Rocky Top" as Alabama fans filed out of the stadium in Nashville is a favorite bowl memory of mine, though nothing tops Rhys Lloyd's field goal to beat Oregon in El Paso the year before. Incidentally, the band played "Yellow Rose of Texas" after that game - I suspect they'd play something similar in the event of a Texas Bowl win.

Exactly. I'm sure that there was slight motivation to choosing Rocky Top over any number of other Tennessee-inspired songs given we were playing Alabama, but the reality is the band tries to play something to honor the host city/state when they travel (we played Yellow Rose at other band functions surrounding the Sun Bowl, not just FTW).

The band was great at the bowl game last year. They played and cheered their butts off.

I know the band did a good job last year because I saw some of the video on UMMBV (U of M MB Video), but based upon the ESPN coverage you would have a had a hard time knowing they were even there.

I cannot understand why on some ESPN broadcasts you hear Boomer Sooner, the Hail the the Victors, or Fight ON (USC) every other minute at a very high volume relative to the crowd noise and commentators, but when the same ESPN crew does game like the bowl last year, featuring two very large bands, we never heard the TT or MMB bands much at all. When we do hear the band the Mic. placement is so bad we hear a few woodwind instruments and maybe some drums.

I though ESPN was the gold standard and knew how to set up a broadcast, flawlessly. Do those other big name bands micromanage ESPN to ensure they properly mic the band? If so the MMB needs to put someone in that role, as a lot of this has to do with branding and identity.

We will see on Friday if ESPN does a better job than normal. The Big Ten Network, CBS, Fox, and FS1 do much better job of presenting the marching bands in a consistent way throughout the game than do ESPN / ABC.
