So here's my theory:
Gary Patterson wanted the job in 2006 after initially turning it down, only to find Brewster had already been offered. Maturi's been regretting that ever since and likely went right back to Patterson, who definitively turned him down again. By this time, however, he and Joel have had more than one meeting, so he gives Maturi a memorably enthusiastic recommendation. Maturi is impressed by Patterson's esteem of this particular coach, so much so that Patterson maybe even calls him back once or twice just to get the point across. Maturi makes note of it, planning on landing a bigger name. Edsall is that name and things look locked up until UConn's win on Saturday, at which point Edsall backtracks. Maturi is probably around 0-for-4 at this point and begins to fidget. It will be a B-list name and none of those names have received the kind of endorsement received by the best man at Gary Patterson's wedding--Jerry Kill.
