That when tubby was let go - that the deal with a new coach would have already been done?

Because Tubby was fired so quickly, pretty much the morning after our season ended, it led me to believe that Teague had a good guy in mind whom he felt he had a very good shot at getting, my first thought being Shaka Smart. I really didn't think we had much of a shot at him before Tubby was fired, but Teague made such a quick decision that I thought he had someone really good in mind to take over.

That said, I'm not panicking because we don't have a new coach yet.

The Monday morning tweet about a source saying a verbal agreement with the next coach was already in place had as much to do with the perception of this search as anything.

I thought there was a chance they had something in the works already but am not surprised they didn't. Coaching searches usually don't move that quickly. We are still only 1 week into this, I would expect we will have our guy in the next few days unless by some miracle they are able to pry Marshall away from Wichita State in which case the waiting will continue.

I did. I do think it was Smart and he got cold feet and backed out. But no worries; Norwood knew he had an ace in the hole with Saunders.

Nope. I think Tubby was gone unless they went real deep (Elite 8) in the tourney. The losses in the B1G, the dui and Teague wanting Tubby to let Saul go and the fact donors were not too high on providing funding to a Tubby coached team, I think, sealed his fate long ago and the hiring was a process to go through with Teague and Ellis.

Hard to say. Listening to the presser, I thought Teague seemed pretty cocksure that something was almost done. I don't know why I thought that. It might have been his confident Southern drawl that led me to that conclusion.

Well he sure has the donors fired up now.

When Tubby was originally fired, I thought it was going to be a long process.

I figured that we had no chance at Shaka, Stevens, and Buzz. I never even considered Hoiberg because I thought it was an impossibility. I figured we'd be looking through a list of successful mid-major type of coaches and top notch assistants and we'd pick from that list. I figured that process would take awhile.

However, I genuinely thought Flip was a done deal on Friday. I am surprised that it didn't work out, but all is not lost. The sky is not falling.

No, but I do think NT genuinely believed he would lure Shaka Smart here. I think that set him back a little bit. It's my opinion that Hoiberg and Stevens were never in play. I have no doubt he called them just to cover his bases, but there was no way that Hoiberg was leaving unless the NBA called and we are not a big enough job for Stevens, in my opinion. While I do believe they offered Flip, I also believe they didn't want him to accept. This covers two things for NT: first, it shows he tried to get the local favorite but the local guy turned him down. Second, if the local guy accepts, his staff is loaded with handpicked people that NT and Mr. Ellis like and approve of. I think the end result is a win-win for NT, despite the punching bag he as been. All anyone will remember in five years, save for a few folks on this board, is that it was offered and he turned it down. I don't know who we end up with or if they will be any good, but it will be someone NT wants or someone he is less high on but has a staff that NT is happy with.

That's more of a MN opinion. It seems people in VCU nation think Shaka felt betrayed by Teague. Teague had begged him to stay at VCU, they were building something great, etc., and then he leaves for MN. I don't know what's right, but I've never seen evidence of this great relationship between the two.

Win-win if he's always dreamt about being the AD at Youngstown State or Elon College.

You are right about this unless it is revealed that it was a sham offer.

Tubby's fate was sealed when this administration took over and saw the basketball was not preforming up to their expectations. A good NCAA run would have complicated things but it was very clear they wanted to make a change.

AD's don't like inherited coaches, they will live with them if they are winning at a really high level but if they see a reason to make a move they will, just the nature of the beast. The process is still moving along at a decent pace at this point, if it drags on for another full week with no real movement there might be some cause for concern but even then these things take a lot of time because there are a ton of details to work out.

That was very consistent from the VCU people. I never knew if the relationship was soured so I thought maybe there was still a chance, but I'm guessing it's one of those deals where professionally they respect one another, but they probably wouldn't work together again cause of it.

Regarding the search, when Tubby was fired, I didn't think a new coach would be picked already, but then we got the rumors about there already being a replacement and that threw the whole perception out of whack IMO.

I think Tubby was not sitting well with Teague and Ellis at all (and Ellis interviews really seemed to indicate that), and barring a major run, they were not sticking with him and just decided to end it quickly rather than draw it out. If you know you're going another way, no point in letting it linger, just cut the cord and move on to the search.

Not sure. I really don't care if it takes a few weeks to find the right guy. No one ever heard of Jim Boeheim when he took the Syracuse job. Johnny Wooden wasn't a big name. If NT had hired Shaka for MN and not VCU fans would have been screaming about a no name coach. Just relax people and read today's Strib story on the process.
