Played poorly today. What's going on with him?

The much promoted soph slump ... Blake when though it, Colton may be in it as well ... Give them all time @ they'll be fine.

He's pressing. Needs to let the game come to him a little bit more. Play tough defense and hit the open shots. I've gotten the impression this year that he has looked to score first vs. going with the flow of the game. If he does this he's got the tools to be a legit big ten player.

I don't think Iverson is playing that poorly. His role might be a physical presence off the bench. If we get Mbwake and White at some point, he'll be playing behind 3 players in the post.

Just going through a tough time. The kid is good and has talent, and is a great Gopher! He's probably pressing to make an impression and get more playing time; but it's a catch-22 because pressing the game probably ends up in mistakes and missed shots. He'll be just fine.

This whole board said the same about Blake last year, and now look.

Blake at least plays smart when he isn't shooting well. Devoe turns the ball over, sucks on defense, doesn't rebound, dribbles forever looking for his own shot, takes terrible shots, and doesn't pass well.

Three guys who have gotten a lot of crap on this forum contributed big time today. First, of course was Blake. Ohio State definitely doesn't defend the 3 like Purdue but Blake did make a couple of them with someone right on him. Al also had a nice game. Scored different ways, took care of the ball, and his defense on Turner the first half was great. Colton had some plays early that made you wince, but his rebounding and hustle on loose balls was a key to us taking control of the game. Devoe will also get it figured out and have games where he's a contributor and I still think will have a couple of games where he's a key guy. With the way Tubby divides up the minutes someone who is struggling is going to be out there being noticed. On another team he might not see the court. This also gives him a chance to work his way out of it like Devoe will do.

Agree with both posts.

Devoe is just trying to figure out his role in the mix of things and the Gophers are pretty stacked at the guard position, so his errors/missteps (as Mulligan stated) are just that much more amplified.

Give the kid a break... he'll figure it out and fortunately, his position has a lot of options right now.

Darned if I don't remember the same criticism of Hoff last year (except the "dribbles forever" stuff). I'm pretty sure he'll come through this ordeal and will make great contributions either later this season or next year.

IMO Devoe will have a couple of breakout games, kinda like he did at Penn State last year. Nobody knows when or where, but at some point we will need his shooting desperately.

Those criticisms are nothing like Hoffarber's. Even when Hoffarber struggled last year, unlike Devoe, he didn't turn the ball over, he didn't shot too often and have a poor shot selection, he didn't suck at passing, and he didn't suck at rebounding. And the difference is that Hoffarber proved to be a great shooter and decision maker his freshman year, so everyone expected him to snap out of it last year. Devoe hasn't proven to be good at either except for in a few very good games.

Well, they are true. Can you tell me something I've said about his game that's incorrect? It's not that I think Devoe is a terrible player or that I think he will never be good. It's just frustrating watching him a lot of the time because he's the type of player who is in there mostly to score (let's be honest, he doesn't add much more than that), but when he isn't doing that (which is most of the season), I think it hurts the team having him out there. I think he'll break out of the slump eventually because he does have the ability to get hot and score in bunches, but I don't really ever see him being a consistent player unless he starts making better decisions with the ball (mainly his shot selection).

He's been reading some of Underground629's posts about him and believing them.

You're right only in the sense that those earlier ones dealt with Hoffarber and yours deal with Joseph. But the content and the tenor are pretty similar.

Devoe hasn't proven to be good at either (shooting or decision-making) except for in a few very good games.
I've emphasized your qualification about which we seem to agree. You'll see the same general pattern of production with Hoff in his freshman year.

Yep, Devoe is struggling. But it's reversible and I am confident that next year this time we'll be pleased that Devoe is on this team and happy with his contributions during both this season and next.

You, on the other hand, can use Ruppert's "lamb blasting" device to castigate our Canadian student athlete aboot the room and collapse onto a Chesterfield, renting your clothing, wailing at the moon and so on and so forth. ...

I think Devoe Joseph is a good player, and predicted earlier he could be a breakthrough player this year. He might be figuring things out, and trying to do too much as he's working through a funk. He can play 1 and 2, and has shown the potential to drive to the basket and shoot from outside. I hope he doesn't get too frustrated with how things are working out for him this year.

I like Devoe. I am glad he is here.

I don't think he should play the 1. Cobbs should be the backup 1 in most cases.

I think Devoe's minutes should be at the 2 or the 3 (spell Blake). Let the kid shoot.

Yesterday he had one of his poorer outings. So what? Every Gopher has had a game or two like that.

IMHO.

Keep plugging away and keep shooting Devoe.

Could simply be a confidence issue with Devoe, when you are an offensively talented player, not seeing the ball go through the hoop can be difficult. I have no doubt he will bounce back, but it's more difficult on a team like the Gophers where depth limits his minutes. While other posters are correct in saying that he might not even be playing for a talented team with a shorter rotation, it can be tough to get back in to the flow of the game in limited minutes as well. He might need to take 3 shots in 4 possessions to get a feel for where he's at, and that's tough to do on this Gophers team. Devoe was the lead dog in high school, got a ton of shots, and scored a ton of points. Now he's playing fewer minutes, getting less shots, and arguably has more comptition for backcourt minutes than he did last year. If Blake goes through a slump this year, the Gophers will badly need Devoe to pick up the slack. I hope he's ready and I think he will be.

That was a brutal "block" by Evan Turner on his first shot. He just had the ball grabbed out of his hands as he was shooting it ala Kevin Garnett a few times with the T-Wolves. He's just trying to find his place in the offense.

Look to pass first, move the ball and then take the shot if your open. Pass the ball and look for your spot, trust your teammates to find you. It's not impressive that he can create his own shot, most guy's can (D2, Juco too).

If it's important for the Joseph brother to play together maybe Devoe should transfer to one of the three schools Cory is considering. Oh wait, they wouldn't take Devoe.

True, statistically they defend it better than Purdue.

Settle down there, big guy. Everything will be okay. And by the way, Cory is considering us, so it wouldn't make much sense for Devoe to transfer to a school that he's already at.

He needs to get stronger

I think that is why Hoff is so much better this year. Devoe's slight build makes it easy to push him off ball. Earlier in the year in the non-conf schedule against less physical teams he played better and I believe actually scored in double figures in a few of those games. Yesterday he was absolutely manhandled.

That was one of the sweeter blocks I've seen. I liked DJ's block on him though too.

Dumb comments.

Kansas and Texas BOTH recruited Devoe Joseph hard.

Cory is considering 5 schools, not 3.

Not sure if 'hard' is accurate, but Cory is considering the Texas Longhorns, Devoe was Texas A&M.

If it's important for the Joseph brother to play together maybe Devoe should transfer to one of the (meant to write other) three schools Cory is considering. I forgot about UNLV, although I would be surprised is he selects them. I was being sarcastic, but the point was, they would not want him.

Devoe's biggest asset to the Gophers right now helping attract his brother. Even if he starts knocking down a higher percentage of shots, I still won't be impressed unless he become a better team player and improves other aspects of his game.

FALSE. Devoe was recruited HARD by Kansas and Texas, not A&M.

(Clipped) NOVEMBER 22, 2007

Devoe Joseph, a 6-2 shooting guard out of Ajax (Ontario) Pickering High, has committed to Minnesota coach Tubby Smith, choosing that school over Texas, Kansas and Vanderbilt. Now he will be part of Smith's effort to put Minnesota on the national map.

"Devoe decided to sign with Minnesota," said Grassroots Canada coach Ro Russell. "He really liked his visit at Texas (this past weekend), but felt the most comfortable with coach Tubby Smith, coach Vince Taylor and Minnesota. They had been recruiting him the longest and the hardest. His parents, who are great people, also liked Minnesota the best as well. I think he will do very good there."

Russell listed Joseph as the No. 1 player in Canada and said he was a "potential top 50 player" in the U.S. and Canada. He is ranked No. 18 among shooting guards in the Class of 2008 by Rivals and averaged 22.6 points and 5.8 rebounds this past summer playing for Canada in the FIBA U19 World Championship. Joseph averaged 27 points while leading Pickering to a 40-4 record last season.

David Joseph, Devoe's dad and the Pickering coach, compared his son to Ray Allen and Chauncey Billups.

"The guy from Michigan told me he's lke Ray Allen shooting-wise," David said. "He's a good long-distance shooter. I guess he could be like Chauncey BIllups when he gets stronger. He can be a point guard like Chauncey."
