However, Brewster received an adjusted buyout package that reduces his payment from $400,000 per years remaining on his contract to $200,000 per years left. That means Brewster would receive $600,000 if he's fired after next season -- $200,000 times three years. He would have received $400,000 had he not received an extension, but $1.2 million had the university extended his buyout at its original base.

Well that answers a few questions for us Gopherholer's. At first glance a pretty shrewd negotiations by Maturi and Rotenberg.

I was just about to post this too haha. I think its a pretty fair deal to both sides. He doesn't deserve a raise and we lowered his buyout and theres a ton of incentives, so if the team performs, he gets paid. Anybody have a link to all Big Ten coach's salaries?

I just read the terms. Wow. If the team doesn't improve next year it won't be for lack of incentive for the coaches. $50,000 for every win over 6 should be quite the motivator for Brewster. How often is a coach's extension announced where there is no raise what so ever and the buy-out is actually decreased? I'd guess hardly never if not ever. Very shrewd negotiations by Maturi. Maturi definitely realized he had all the power in these negotiations. Brewster needed an extension for recruiting purposes but no leverage because he currently has no outside interest from other schools/nfl teams in need of a coach.

I finally agree with a contract given to our coach. Brewster's base pay did not go up but he has a lot of incentives. The lower buy out was a good thing also. They learned from the mistakes they made with Mason.

I learned some time ago that it was Brewster himself that proposed the lower buyout number. I think very highly of him for doing that.

He is still very much a work in progress. But I prefer to think that Brewster WANTS to be here, rather than he has no options. For the 1st time in 30+ years, it makes me happy that we have a coach that really wants to be here.

It's a lower buyout overall, but the cost of firing him after next season went up. I know we paid more than that to part ways with Mason, but maybe this is a sign that Maturi expects Brewster to be here longer than one more year.

Well, people may disagree over whether Brewster deserved an extension, but I think this contract shows that he is on thin ice. Everyone can agree that our football team needs to show a marked improvement this year in order for Brewster to have a job here. We all know that turning around a program takes time, but going into this year he will have had 3 full years of recruiting...

While I have always been a Brewster supporter, 4 years in is somewhere around the point where he needs to put up or shut up.

I like the terms and I like that he could potentially be here a couple more years. I know I don't have the most popular stance on him as a coach but I really think he deserves a shot to be here in 2011 unless we only win 2-3 games this coming year. I think in 2011 with his recruits being mostly redshirt juniors and seniors and the easier schedule they should and could win 9 or 10 games, which would be tied for the best record in the last what 40 years. So unless they totally suck this year I hope he is here 2 more years. And if they don't win at least 8 in 2011 then it is time for change.

When? NEVER! Because no other NCAA school would have extended him. They wouldn't settle for nonsense like this in a contract. You don't give a coach an extension and lower his pay! Oh man this is rich. The U is a joke at this point, "shrewd negotiating"? What? And wow did this extension help recruiting. Hell it probably HURT recruiting. I sure wouldn't come here if I knew Brewster was going to be around longer than this year.

What a sham.

His pay wasn't lowered. It remains the same as before, except now for each game he wins over 6, he gets payed another $50,000 and would then be considered a raise.

he's getting $1.0 million per year before incentives

the way I read it he gets $800,000 plus $200,000 per year vesting on Dec 31, 2011 - this is before any incentives - not too bad

I love it when people stirring the pot stop using straw men and move straight to making stuff up/not reading. Makes me laugh that much harder. :)

You got to give Demi some credit, he even makes Pantherhawk seem like a genius!

Actually, UST I think that if you ask Brewster how many victories will he get next year he would probably say 10 or more. He doesn't see himself failing or any very realistic chances that he could fall and fall hard next season. So if you are Maturi you put in the incentives for over 6 wins (which Brewster probably thinks he will easily achieve) and get him to agree to a low buyout clause. Everybody thinks they got a great deal out of it so everyone wins.

I am not buying your belief that Brewster WANTS to be here rather than he has no options. Not for one minute. Nobody in their right mind even had him on their radar for any coaching jobs this year. We are pretty safe from teams trying to steal him away. If Kansas had wanted him, they probably could have had him very easily. It's my belief that Tim Brewster has less than 3 years left as the Gopher football coach. He will either be successful here and move on to the first good opportunity or he will get fired after he finishes sub .500 either next year or the year after. And before you give me some angry long winded reply, I will just simply say that time will tell, but I think I am right on this.

I will be the guy telling you "I told you so" in another year or two.

While I applaud Maturi for negotiating terms that were favorable and will not impede him from firing Brew if we go 4-8 next year, I have a hard time figuring what the point of this was? They announed it too late to help this year's recruiting. I suppose Brew was probably telling recruits he had an extension long before that, but it obviously didn't stop any of the defections. And with terms like these, how does it help next year's recruiting?

The pot stirrers usually are the village idiots. They can't understand what's going on or comprehend matters, so they just start spouting off futile BS. Hilarious.

The most important thing here is that he was extended.

I agree it was important to get the extension done but I also agree with Howeda in that it should have been done much earlier. I do not know if any of the recruits that decommitted had this as the biggest reason they went elsewhere or if we lost someone we would have gotten but I will say this:

During the prime recruiting period you need to show stability and you need to show that your program is on the rise. I am pretty sure that rival coaches pointed to Minnesota and said, "There is a lot of instability over there - Brewster doesn't have an extension, their offense was a complete mess the last half of the year and he could very easily be gone after next year. They are now trying out a NEW offensive coordinator and that will take some time to adjust. They graduate their entire front 7 on defense so they will have a hard time being better on that side of the ball. They will be picked 10th or 11th in the Big Ten next year by almost every expert in the country next year. When Brewster is telling you that his team is on the rise, he is not telling you the truth."

Anyways, that is the stuff that rival coaches are probably saying, if not even more harsh and it is probably enough to cast a lot of doubt into the recruits' minds. I still think that Brewster did a pretty good job of recruiting considering a pretty lousy last half of the season which destroyed any momentum we got from the first half.
