Derrick Engel to Winona State

I was hoping he'd walk on too. Kind of surprising to me that he's going to Winona St, I figured he'd end up at a mid-major someplace. Best of luck to him.

Aye - would have been nice to have such speed on the team.
Even if he only played special teams, 4.4 is damn quick.

Show me the money !

Can't blame him if somebody offered him a scholarship. College is an huge undertaking for any family. Don't know if he was offered a full or partial but any help he can get I'm sure will be appreciated by his family.

I am also surprised Engel didn't walk on at the U

I also know that NDSU looked long at hard at Engel and Wahlo. Both about the same size, very similar speed although Engel is a touch faster. In the end the insiders say it came to the physical nature of the two WRs. Wahlo a better blocker, more physical when getting checked and better going up for balls in a crowd. So, in the end NDSU went for Wahlo rather than Engel and got him. Engel should have a great career at Winona, however, but a bit surprised he didn't look at Duluth.

I'm going to guess Duluth doesn't have much money to give out because they had to cut down to 24 scholarships when they joined the NSIC.

I respect this decision. If he as good as advertised, I'm sure he will have a really good career at WSU.

Duluth's situation will be ongoing. They will be transitioning down to 24 scholarships (were able to have up to 36 while in the NCC); I won't say "never", but don't expect an NSIC school to be in D2 title contention again (assuming the structure of D2 stands going forward as it does now), certainly not after the next year or two when those former NCC schools (SCSU, Winona, MNSU-Mankato, Augustana) are down to the 24 scholarships entirely. The conference will send a school or two to the playoffs, but again - title contention, I don't expect to happen.

I'm willing to debate that point. The NSIC is in a region with the MIAA and RMAC. The RMAC, much like the NSIC has a scholarship cap below that of the D-II maximum. The MIAA allows D-II limit. There is some discussion to see the scholarship level moving up gradually, however I'm not sure how serious. Sadly one of the factors holding it back is the few schools that are simply struggling, noticeably MSU-Moorhead, UM-Crookston and Upper Iowa.

And additionally, I'm not convinced the D-II scholarship limit will stay at the 36 level. The votes came down to a 2/1 margin (approx.) when the RMAC and the PSAC co-sponsored a failed bill to lower the limit to 30. If I remember correctly, it worked down to approximately that split in the votes from the NSIC (vote taken prior to the NCC castaways joining).

I agree the UMD run is one that isn't likely to push through again soon. But remember, (and I'm going to sound Warrior honk) Winona State has had decent showing in the post season working of a restricted number. So it's not impossible to have success.

As long as one doesn't meet up with Grand Valley. :p

Not to get off track here, but as I said above - "assuming the structure of D2 stands going forward as it does now".

Before last year, check out the record of the NSIC league winner in the national playoffs. I can't remember them winning a single game, but I do recall WSU playing North Dakota tough in a first round game before losing 40 something to 26(?).

Anyway, again, best of luck to Engel. It's a great campus, nice stadium (good game-day atmosphere).

I think that was a second round game. I believe it was '03, maybe '04, after they beat Grand Valley State (maybe it was Emporia St.) at home.

Far enough.

Winona State has been in the playoffs a few times '01, '03, '04, '06, '07. In 2001, the Warriors put more points on North Dakota than the next three teams the eventual national champion UND would face. In 2003, Winona State notched the first NSIC NCAA post season win, defeating Emporia State, 10-3. The nextweek, the Warriors had a lead with under two minutes to go against the Fighting Sioux, at their house. In 2004, Grand Valley State came to town, and the Warriors lost by three to the power that is GVSU. The '06 and '07 WSU/UND match ups in the post season were UGLY!

In 2002, Minnesota Duluth made the post season, and barely lost to Northwest Missouri State, on a last minute touchdown.

Yes, coming into this season, the NSIC had only one NCAA post season victory. But honestly, they went toe to toe with the finest and came pretty darn close. I remember in 2001 when it was thought impossible for an NSIC team to make the post season with anything short of a perfect record...oh how the times have changed.
