Dennis Dodd: Jerry Kill is the 7th best hire out of 21

For whatever reason, Dodd hates us and always has. I can't figure out why.

"By home run, I mean that Kill will get the Gophers to 7-5 and, if he is wise, get the hell out."

Wow. What an a-hole.

Though I don't appreciate the slam of the U, at the same time, the U does have a well earned reputation of not supporting the football program that it needs to shatter.

I actually agree with this list more than the one Mandel put together. However, I do not understand the David Shaw love shown by both and could have done without the cheap shot at the end.

Could have done without the cheap shot. Not sure what purpose it had other than to show his true colors. But something has to be said for the fact that even the national media knows how badly mismanaged the search was.

Who is really sure how the search was managed other than from rumor, gossip and innuendo? The only thing we know for certain was Maturi and company did not let a lot of info out. Most of what was reported seemed more like writer/reporter (lets not forget Adam and Savegopherfootball.com) speculation (and meddling).

All things being considered, Maturi ended up with a pretty good hire, especially when compared to other schools.

Often times I wonder if the press tries to find ways to discredit any who will not appease them. That is kinda what I see here and have noticed at other times as well.

He's still mad about being wrong about Tubby to VA.

He was actually the DB who had Tubby going to Auburn on the morning we were set to play Xavier in last year's NCAA tourney. He was boldly wrong.

How he can have Paul Pasqualoni ranked anywhere near the Top Ten is beyond me. That is about the most uninspiring hire of the entire silly season.

Notice how in general, the "bigger" the school the "better" the hire. What an idiot. Did he expect Ball State to get Will Muschamp?

+19

I don't see how he ranks Maryland's hire of Edsall in the top 5. To me that was a horrible, uninspiring hire that could very well end up being a down grade from where Maryland was before. This Dodd guy is an idiot. This ranking is so transparent. As Eker said, the rankings are based on the the school size.

Talk about your completely subjective and arbitrary rankings based on nuttin more substantial than one guys personal opinion. Impressive stuff there.

Why so mismanaged?

We were after Edsall, Hoke and Kill - and all were interested. Hoke and Kill will make the Little Brown Jug mean something again...

There is no denying it was mismanaged from a PR standpoint. The initial "WTF" reaction over Kill subsided quickly, but there never should have been a need for the reaction at all if expectations hadn't been raised needlessly.

Whether all the "no one wants to touch the job with a 10 foot pole stuff because of Maturi" stuff is a different issue.

No doubt, he should not have said "Tubby hire". He was, however, going to get the best hire he could with the resources he had to work with. What resources he actually did have to work with is another matter. I would rather he believe the quality of the U job and try to get the best hire he could and fall short rather then start low and end up there. Had way to much of that with Mason.

The U's problem in the sports department and especially football did not begin with Maturi. It began way back in the 60s when the school intentionally failed to support football because it wanted to be know for its scholasticism and did not want to be know as a football school. There was no understanding that the school could be both.

I guess Kill didn't have as many stars, eh.

He's always had an axe to grind with Minnesota, not sure why. If I remember right, he's also a Mizzou grad who was pushing hard for the Tigers to be the 12th team when the expansion took place. Anyway, I looked through his blogs to find references he'd made about Minnesota in the past and found this bit of info that pretty much cements why Leach was never, ever going to get the job here:

• Former Minnesota coach Glen Mason provided one of the colorful looks at Mike Leach to date. Mason, now with the Big Ten Network, told this story recently to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. This was from December 2006 before Minnesota and Texas Tech were going to meet in the Insight Bowl in Phoenix.

"We were brought to New York a while before the game to be at the opening bell (of NASDAQ) -- myself and [athletic director Joel] Maturi, and [coach] Mike Leach and [AD] Gerald Myers from Tech," Mason said.

"We had dinner at a very nice Manhattan restaurant the night before. Leach showed up in khaki pants, an Under Armour T-shirt and a sports coat. We walked around for an hour after dinner and were headed back to the hotel. Leach said he was going to stay out for a while.

"The next day, we get to NASDAQ, Leach shows up and he's in the same clothes. I honestly think he had been out all night. We all were told to say a few words but keep it to no more than 30 seconds. Maturi said something, then Myers, then me and then Leach gets the mike. He says, 'I don't have much to add, so as we say in Lubbock, 'GUNS UP!'

"He shouts it, and people on the floor hear 'guns,' and they are ducking for cover, and security is running around.

"I tell you, Leach ... he's a different sort of cat.''

Ha! That's a great story. Leach is a character, that much is for sure. :)

That sounds like the story everyone was referring to during the search. :)

this is the same idiot (Dodd) who reported Tubby was pretty much gone the morning of our NCAA game vs. XAVIER, i sent him a hate email then, and I have no problem doing it again. To sort of quote John Chaney "Dennis Dodd, if I see you on the street I'll kick your BEEP"

Is this guy joking or something? Maybe he is being sarcastic because he thinks the botched quck hire pittsburg did is somehow in the top 10. No way pittsburg, maryland or conneticut are better hires than ours.

Or even imo Miami.

How long has this clown been doing this ranking? I wonder if it's possible to find his grades from four years ago and compare them to how the hires are doing (or did).

IMO he should provide that data with this years' rankings to show some credibility. It's easy to just throw out rankings every year, but it's even easier when you aren't accountable for previous rankings...

I would urge everyone to take anything and everything Dudd says with a sarcastic smile. The guy is a fraud who tried to break a story about Tubby Smith heading to Auburn while at the same covering his butt by saying "there might not be anything to it." This came on the heels of a similarly stupid insinuation that Tubby as signed, sealed and delivered to Virginia. In other words, he really hasn't got any grounds to evaluate anything. He's been consistently shown to be a fool. But sportsline likes fools, they still employ Greg Doyel after all....
