"By home run, I mean that Kill will get the Gophers to 7-5 and, if he is wise, get the hell out."
Wow. What an a-hole.
Could have done without the cheap shot. Not sure what purpose it had other than to show his true colors. But something has to be said for the fact that even the national media knows how badly mismanaged the search was.
He's still mad about being wrong about Tubby to VA.
Who is really sure how the search was managed other than from rumor, gossip and innuendo? The only thing we know for certain was Maturi and company did not let a lot of info out. Most of what was reported seemed more like writer/reporter (lets not forget Adam and Savegopherfootball.com) speculation (and meddling).
All things being considered, Maturi ended up with a pretty good hire, especially when compared to other schools.
Often times I wonder if the press tries to find ways to discredit any who will not appease them. That is kinda what I see here and have noticed at other times as well.

There is no denying it was mismanaged from a PR standpoint. The initial "WTF" reaction over Kill subsided quickly, but there never should have been a need for the reaction at all if expectations hadn't been raised needlessly.
Whether all the "no one wants to touch the job with a 10 foot pole stuff because of Maturi" stuff is a different issue.
He's always had an axe to grind with Minnesota, not sure why. If I remember right, he's also a Mizzou grad who was pushing hard for the Tigers to be the 12th team when the expansion took place. Anyway, I looked through his blogs to find references he'd made about Minnesota in the past and found this bit of info that pretty much cements why Leach was never, ever going to get the job here:
• Former Minnesota coach Glen Mason provided one of the colorful looks at Mike Leach to date. Mason, now with the Big Ten Network, told this story recently to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. This was from December 2006 before Minnesota and Texas Tech were going to meet in the Insight Bowl in Phoenix.
"We were brought to New York a while before the game to be at the opening bell (of NASDAQ) -- myself and [athletic director Joel] Maturi, and [coach] Mike Leach and [AD] Gerald Myers from Tech," Mason said.
"We had dinner at a very nice Manhattan restaurant the night before. Leach showed up in khaki pants, an Under Armour T-shirt and a sports coat. We walked around for an hour after dinner and were headed back to the hotel. Leach said he was going to stay out for a while.
"The next day, we get to NASDAQ, Leach shows up and he's in the same clothes. I honestly think he had been out all night. We all were told to say a few words but keep it to no more than 30 seconds. Maturi said something, then Myers, then me and then Leach gets the mike. He says, 'I don't have much to add, so as we say in Lubbock, 'GUNS UP!'
"He shouts it, and people on the floor hear 'guns,' and they are ducking for cover, and security is running around.
"I tell you, Leach ... he's a different sort of cat.''

Is this guy joking or something? Maybe he is being sarcastic because he thinks the botched quck hire pittsburg did is somehow in the top 10. No way pittsburg, maryland or conneticut are better hires than ours.
