per Sports Business Journal:
Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany admitted that high school football associations and football coaches within the conference are pushing back on his plan to schedule up to four games per season on Friday nights. “It’s created a strong reaction,” he said last night during the Shirley Povich Symposium at the Univ. of Maryland. “Quite honestly, this was not a financial consideration. What we’re trying to do is find a window for good games -- maybe not the best games -- and putting them on national platforms.” ESPN's Scott Van Pelt, a Maryland grad, was on the panel and asked Delany, “If (Michigan coach Jim) Harbaugh says that he’s just not going to do it, does that mean that Maryland has to play every Friday because Michigan won’t?” Delany responded, “Seven institutions said they would do a home-and-away. We had six institutions that said they’d be happy to do it away and occasionally at home. Each institution had the prerogative.” Delany said ESPN and Fox would pick four games per season for that Friday night window over the next six years -- games that typically would have kicked off at 12:00pm ET on Saturdays. He said that he has met with high school officials, who expressed their concerns. “I acknowledge the tension,” he said. “I’ve heard it from a variety of perspectives. We’re going to have to address it and do the best we can to mitigate it. We’ll mitigate it in part by being better partners with high schools in other ways. We have good relationships. It’s very important for us to get that done in the right way.”
