Deinhart reporting Hoke out and Edsall top target

Here are some tweets:

"A Big Ten head coach told me that Al Golden has interviewed for the Minnesota job."

"I also was told by a good source that Randy Edsall is a top target at Minnesota."

"A source close to Brady Hoke has told me that he no longer is involved in the Minnesota search."

Go Gophers!!

Count me as one that can't get excited at all about Randy Edsall. I hope this report is entirely false.

I'm with you CDH. Edsall competes in a weak conference year after year. He may have built UCONN from the ground up... but he lost to Michigan this year and I can't think of any signature wins that program has come up with.

Well it was Hoke's job to lose yesterday and now Randy Edsall is the #1 target.

From Maturi's perspective I understand the Edsall angle. He's close with the Notre Dame AD and Edsall was a finalist for that job last year. Having said that, I have little interest in Randy Edsall.

I was wondering if anything we'd ever hear anything about Al Golden. Strange that it's another big 10 coach who told Tom Deinhart about it though.

Well, Edsall is a top target. Probably safe to say Golden is a top target too, since he's actually been interviewed for the job.

Likely because Hoke said NO... reminder: it's a high-stakes game of chess... negotiating with agents, making it sound like a few are the No. 1 choice... nobody wants to find out that they were choice No. 3 or No. 4.

Edsall likely to win the big east

championship this year and an automatic bid to a BCS bowl game. Started off slowly but have really come on late to charge to the front of the Big East.

Not thrilled about Edsall. Please Golden, say yes.

What a buzzkill. I was excited after the victory and was excited to hear Hoke would be the new coach. Edsall doesn't excite me at all. Hopefully if Edsall is hired, he will make me eat my words.

I'm thoroughly underwhelmed by both Hoke and Edsall, but at least the latter has HC experience in a BCS conference, and looks to be a week away from taking his team to a BCS bowl.

PLEASE let it be Golden. He wouldn't interview if he weren't interested in the position. He is the only realistic candidate being discussed over the last few days who would show that Minnesota is serious about being a national football power again.

Seems like a lot of Edsall hate. I would be decidedly underwhelmed by hiring him, but I don't think it's the end of the world. Yeah, the Big East is an easy conference and his record isn't spectacular; but he did lead the program from the I-AA ranks and got them competitive in fairly short order. And they have an off-campus stadium.

Just saying, he's not an A-lister, but neither are any of the other candidates being talked about now.

I bet if he wins the Big East next week you guys will be all over him. Tom Coughlin guy that literally built a program. This guy would be a good get.

Info: Edsall is 21–26 in Big East conference play.

Never thought I'd live to see the day we're targeting a coach coming off losses to Temple and Rutgers.

But here we are!

I'm officially agnostic on the coaching search. I seriously have no idea.

Edsall wouldn't be my number 1 choice, but he has done some nice things at UConn. I know some will point out that Skip Holtz built them into a d1aa power, but Edsall has made them relevant in the Big (L)East.

LOL - this is getting comical. It's a new "breaking news" tweet every day.

Can't wait until this is over.

This is funny, what terrible candidate will be linked to Minnesota next? I really don't think we need to worry about Hoke or Edsall being the coach.

If he gets them to a BCS bowl game, would he be worth waiting a month for? Not in my book, and not sure he'd want to pass up the opportunity to coach in a "big" game.

You're right. We are definitely in the position to look down on lesser bowl games.

No, I would agree we are not. If I'm in Edsall's shoes, and get the opportunity to coach in a BCS game ~ I do it. But, at the same time not sure the Gophers can afford to wait for another month. :)

Can't believe everyone seems to swallow this stuff hook, line and sinker. It's not only the tweet of the day, but the panic of the day.

Enquiring minds wanna know!

I both love and hate this ride.

Reading between the lines it appears that Edsall and Golden got the same kind of informational meeting Hoke got. It appears that Hoke did not make the cut the status of Edsall and Golden is unknown. It appears that the Gophers have thrown a wide net and are in the process of paring down the list. As far as a B10 coach knowing whats going on with Golden don't forget that he played for JoePa and has extensive contacts in the B10.

If Golden insist on having a Penn State clause, we should run not walk.
We have already been through this with a man named Holtz.

One of the big things that is happening over the entire breadth of executive search-and-hire is that guys will pull themselves out if it looks as though they aren't going to get the job. We had an example of this with the hiring of the new University President just last week. Kaler would have stayed in until the end because it would have been a promotion for him, but for someone who is currently a highly-placed administrator at another school, it would have given the impression that he was passed over by someone less experienced or whatever.

In other words, for someone like Golden, interviewing or expressing interest can serve as a signal to other schools that he's an up-and-comer. For someone like Edsall or Hoke--both in their 50s--it may signal, "Oops. Passed over." It's all about the PR.

I work with school districts and you see this all the time with superintendent searches with candidates pulling themselves out before their candidacy becomes public when it's obvious they aren't going to get the job.

Is it the name?

Will someone please explain the enthusiasm for Al Golden? 27-34 at Temple.
