Rossi Nominated for Broyles Award

University of Minnesota defensive coordinator Joe Rossi was named a nominee for the 2021 Broyles Award today by the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation. The award is presented annually to college football's top assistant coach. Rossi, who oversees a stingy and reliable Gopher defense, was one of 59 nominees recognized on Monday.

The 59 nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,270 assistant coaches representing 127 Division One programs across the country. The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee and current college head coaches.

Minnesota is 24-12 with Rossi as the defensive coordinator and this year the Gophers are allowing just 296.7 yards per game (seventh in the nation) and 19.2 points per game (tied for 16th in the nation). Minnesota also ranks ninth in the country in run defense (99.9 yards per game) and 27th in the nation in passing yards allowed per game (196.8 yards per game).

Minnesota last allowed less than 20 points in a season in 1999, when it allowed 16.3 points per game in 12 games. The Gophers last allowed less than 300 yards per game in a season in 1977 when it allowed 292.8 yards per game in 11 games.

A 43-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semi-finalists and five finalists from the list of nominees and an overall winner.

Go Gophers!!
