DB CJ Smith to Team Transfer Portal

I think we need about ten more scholarship guys to transfer by June if all of our commits sign.

He never saw the field and the 6th from 2018 to transfer or retire.

Let's see, correct me if I'm wrong on these:

Viramontes - not sure if he even counts? Enrolled early for spring ball, assumed he would be the starter, lost in spring ball, and didn't even stay after spring
Reigelsperger & Edmonds - medical issues forced them to retire
York & Norton - OL who probably didn't anticipate the late signings of Faalele and Dunlap, when they committed to Minnesota, and have transferred out
CJ Smith - no playing time, transferring out

Hate seeing people leave the program, but I am all for keeping their best interest in mind. BUT, it seems like players are transferring out based on stiffer/better competition, and play time, and NOT cultural issues.

I really have no problems with guys transferring out if they think they aren't getting the playing time they want. They only have a five year running clock (in most cases) to do what they want to do, they should be allowed to try something and if it doesn't work out, try something else.

If coaches can leave when they want to so should the players.

Ah, Culture issues could be a reason guys dont see the field.

I've also no problem with folks transfering if they're not getting playing time. These kids are on a clock,

Three of the four CFP QBs are transfer guys. If that does not encourage musical chairs I do not know what would.

I still can't believe Burrow wasn't good enough to play at OSU. That was a good transfer.

It gets worse
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Joe Burrow just now on ESPN with Rinaldi. <br><br>&quot;I wanted to go to Nebraska but they told me I wasn&#39;t good enough.&quot;</p>&mdash; SoundOFF (@SoundOFF13) <a href="">December 8, 2019</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

You can just post the link to the tweet now that our forum is all futuristic.

CJ Smith is "C Time"
T Smith was "T Time"

That's the way PJ introduced them on the first signing day if I recall.

CJ never made the field after redshirting.
Good luck to him on his transfer.

He was good enough, he just wasn't good enough to beat out Dwayne Haskins (who was also an OK college QB).

It's good for the player, and it's good for the program. If someone is unlikely to see the field, I'd rather see the Gophers use the scholarship on someone else.

I don't know about the program.

If in theory you for example can stack the program with a bunch of DL who stay with the program, know the plays and etc and have them if you need to go to them ... that's a good backup to have compared to a lot of churn behind the scenes. They might not see the field, but you like that they're there rather than a lot of backup churn.

But... I consider the player's needs more important so I don't mind that such a situation might be the result.

Joe Burrow comes from quite the lineage. His dad even coached at NDSU! *ducks to avoid flying chairs*

Some attrition is good. If a guy isn’t going to see time after year 3, I’d rather have the scholarship and get another shot. Of a guy realizes after one year he isn’t going to play, happy to see them go and wish them well.

There has to be a number of players that leave each year due to lack of playing time. Not sure what that number is... 4?

Have a question about a transfer's scholarship. Take Sitkowski for example. He entered the portal. Did he instantly lose his scholarship, or does it wait a certain amount of time before it is taken away? The question is what happened to his scholarship after he left the portal and returned to the program? Did he need to be issued a separate scholarship, or was his original scholarship still reserved for him?

What happens if the Gophs give out CJ's scholarship, then he says he wants to stay?

Edit: The 85 schollies are maxed out when he decides to return. Tough shitskies?

This is the new normal. The Gophers lucked out on Chris Williamson and Micah Drew-Treadway.

Here's hoping they luck out on a few more of these.

This staff deserves an A+ with regards to transfers. I don’t think we’ve lost an impact player yet as a transfer - the guys who have left haven’t really seen the field and have typically transferred to lower level programs.

And on the flip side, the guys we’ve brought in have typically been starters and made a significant impact. OJ Smith, Chris Williamson, Dew-Treadway and St Juste.

I think credit goes to PJ Fleck, in this case specifically, but also generally: he has recognized and embraced one of the final frontiers of maximizing sports performance out of athletes (and really, more importantly, developing good humans), which is to develop and enhance their mental health. Just like you enhance their physical health with strength & conditioning, training/treatment, and nutrition.

I don't know, but I assume, that part of the requirement PJ has for these guys is to get some kind of assessment on where they are mentally, what their life goals are, what they hope to get out of transferring to the Gophers program, etc. And he only accepts them in if he likes what he hears from the assessments, thinks they are a match, and so on.

Plus USC transfer and former gopher commit Randal Grimes had a big year at UNLV. Would be a starter next year if we kept him.
