Went on a little twitter rant this morning and frankly I couldn't agree with him more.

“@DaveTelep: Lack of fundamentals & feel for the game in younger prospects surfaced this summer. We need some changes to help our next generation”

“@DaveTelep: Need to find ways for our teachers of the game to have access to players in settings where they can teach & audience is attentive”

@DaveTelep: Huge problem with transition from HS to college. Many high level kids have no ability to put the team before themselves.

@DaveTelep: Lies are perpetrated to our kids. Might be 20 pros in our Top 100. The rest need real jobs one day. Spoiled ones won't make it

@DaveTelep: Parents: you aren't raising an NBA player. Try raising a person to use hoops to get education. If he's a pro, eventually it happens

@DaveTelep: Our HS kids today are content with skipping steps. Best teachers, mechanics, players don't skip steps. It's a process.

@DaveTelep: Our kids play so many games they've lost what it means to value winning. Less games, more emphasis on winning.

@DaveTelep: We have raised a generation of players that BELIEVES the name on the back trumps the name on the front of the jersey .. at all levels

@DaveTelep: If you're mentor throws you out there this summer w/out a go-to-move: fire your mentor.

@DaveTelep: If you're on your third HS in four years, suck it up, become coachable and look in the mirror.

@DaveTelep: You can't have fake toughness, be a fake teammate, have fake skill. Truth comes out. Trick is to correct it before it's too late

@DaveTelep: Best HS players get spoiled. The process pollutes their thinking, gives them false realities. Small fraction can handle the process

@DaveTelep: What I've seen at last 3 camps, kids faking injury to skip instruction sessions. That's garbage. Who you fooling? Why come? Stay home.

@DaveTelep: Westbrook, Durant, Harden didn't transfer into OKC they built something. You too can be a great player and take ownership in your team

@DaveTelep: I watch every training table, talk to trainers, pay attention to know who cheats himself, isn't reliable, afraid of getting uncomfortable

@DaveTelep: Hoops isn't a ticket to NBA. It's a phase of life that can help shape rest of your life. It will cease bouncing. Did you max it out?

@DaveTelep: Text from MAJOR college head coach this A.M. "Key is to find good players not polluted players system hasn't ruined." #truth

@DaveTelep: Been traveling too much, seeing too many kids whose excuses/mentors/false realities trump their actual attitudes, game & abilities

@DaveTelep: If you're the best player in a camp or AAU game, try guarding best player from the other team. Seriously, it helps. You might get better

@DaveTelep: If you're an AAU coach and you play zone as to not get your best player in a difficult matchup, please step aside.

@DaveTelep: College freshmen: unpack your bags, stay a while. College is fun. Enjoy it. Embrace it. You don't get to go back. Don't skip steps.

@DaveTelep: And lastly, if you're a player and are afraid to retweet some of these tweets ... maybe there's a reason. Never too late to change

Good stuff.

Sadly we've become much more of an "I" society than a "we" society. The state of modern day sports certainly reflects that.

Great read, thanks for compiling and posting. I totally agree with this one:

"Our kids play so many games they've lost what it means to value winning. Less games, more emphasis on winning."

Go Gophers!!

Amen to that, Bleed.

An example. I enjoy the heck out of watching my 5th-grade nephew play summer baseball, but they'll end up playing about 35 games. That's a ridiculous number for 11-12 year-old kids. That's a number more suited for American Legion baseball. He loves baseball, but I'm worried he'll get sick of it and lose interest as he gets older. We need to let kids be kids, too. 11-12 year-olds don't need to have 35 games + 2 or 3 practices every week. Some balance and moderation in life is a good thing, especially at a younger age.

No arguments with most of this, but I think a lot of this could be said about kids in general... not just those who play basketball.

Wonder if Telep went on to criticize how he makes a living. Surely some of the media crap isn't helpful in combating what he's criticizing.

He did actually.

@DaveTelep: @KennyKallina @IllmaticDMV I realize my role and it's not perfect. Doesn't mean I shouldn't try.

@DaveTelep: @CoachJustus I'm caught in the middle of this system. Doesn't mean I shouldn't have some social responsibility.

@DaveTelep: @DanWolken we all share blame. Question is what are we going to do about it?

@DaveTelep: @JohnCherry1 Isn't it. You think I'm perfect? Just trying to help enact some change.

@DaveTelep: @marcisenberg @TheyCallMeZo we are all guilty. It's the system and parents that are failing the kids.

@DaveTelep: @JimattheBank Yes. You don't think I struggle with my/our role?

@DaveTelep: @DTRAINED I'm part of the problem. Trying to take chances to use my platform to be part of the solution.

The creation of traveling teams at all ages and the creation of the AAU circuit was done for one reason, the ability to identify and promote a few super stars at the expense of development as a team. There isn't any one thing wrong, it is the whole process, this is the result.

This has been going on for a long time (ex Jordan referring to his teammates as his "supporting cast" and the media constantly talking about the efforts of a single player versus the team) and it doesn't help that recruiting now goes on for kids in grade school to play on "all star teams" that go around destroying teams of lesser talent put together in a normal way. The kids are being told they are special at a younger and younger age and that's not unique to 2012 but has been going on since at least the 90's on some level.

I have two issues with Telep's rant one is that he makes his living evaluating/reporting on the basketball skills of kids from 14-18. The recruiting culture, which he is a part of, is a huge part of the problem he's discussing. The second is the specific idea that college freshman should unpack their bags and "stay awhile"? Why? The NBA draft rules now lock a player in to a relatively modest rookie scale contract. It's all about getting to your second contract, so you should get in the league as soon as possible to get their at a younger age with less miles (and hopefully fewer injuries).

Oops, should have read the follow up by Scher where Telep acknowledges his role, makes for interesting conversation.

Telep raises some interesting points but as others have pointed out he (and his business) is part of the problem.

I've coached AAU, rec league, etc and I've seen the good and the bad. Just like many other things in life it begins and ends with parents. You have to educate yourself and have your priorities in check. AAU Basketball isn't the devil (you can find the same problems in High School sports which is far more shameful and insidious in my opinion) it's made out to be but at the same time it does have some serious issues that need to be addressed.
