Will definitely miss the Minnesota game according to their (I assume) AD...
I assume what that means is that even if he is cleared by the NCAA in time for the game, that MTSU will be suspending him for at least one game.
But, but...
he didn't do anything wrong!
(Did anyone at the press conference mention how hot and humid it is in Murfreesboro today?)

You never, never, never want to get those NCAA guys involved. They start investigating one thing and soon they find all kinds of other items that were not on their original agenda. You know... things like a physical environment not fit for human exposure to dangerous levels of heat and humidity. This could lead to a full scale death penalty for all outdoor MTSU sports.
You're looking at a 3 game suspension, which could be adjusted up or down based on circumstances. I doubt he misses less than two, or more than four games, due to this NCAA infraction.
According to goblueraders.com:
"While there are a lot of sides to the story involving student-athlete Dwight Dasher, all parties agree that there was a $1,500 loan. Therefore, due to a violation of the NCAA amateurism legislation, we are declaring Dwight Dasher ineligible for competition but will be seeking his reinstatement. While we are seeking reinstatement, Dasher will be allowed to practice. It is anticipated that Dasher will miss some competition.
The University is sending a letter to the NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement Staff today. I do not have or expect to have a time table for the NCAA's decision.
The prescribed penalty on this type violation is a 30 percent reduction in the number of games in a season, which can be mitigated either higher or lower. We are not in position to comment any further on Dwight's eligibility status until the NCAA has resolved this matter."
I don't know about 3... I'm thinking more of a 2 game suspension. It is the university suspending him right now, not the NCAA.
A three game suspension is a 25% reduction in games.
A four game suspension is a 33% reduction in games.
I don't think this is a particularly egregious case, so they may go with a less than 30% reduction in games, and I don't think they'll go more than the closest number to 30% which is four games. Two games is the least he will be suspended.
This is your University trying to comply with whatever punishment the NCAA would eventually hand down. If the NCAA agrees with your University's punishment, you will face no further sanctions.

The university just doesn't want to forfeit any wins, if Dasher were to play and was to be found guilty of a violation. It's a smart move by the university. They just sent the re-instatement letter to the NCAA today.
Don't think it's the gambling. It's the money:
The NCAA considers special arrangements to be an “extra benefit”, which are specifically prohibited. This restriction applies to all individuals other than family members or individual that the student-athlete received these benefits from prior to attending college, such as long-time friend or neighbor. Extra benefits include, but are not limited to:
The providing of cash or merchandise
The use of an automobile
The purchase of meals or services at commercial establishments
The use of personal properties (e.g., boats, summer homes, cars, stereos).
Providing holiday or birthday gifts
A special discount payment arrangement or credit on a purchase (airline ticket, clothing) or services.
A loan of money in any amount
The basic rule is that an athlete can not get anything that is not given to every other student except his basic ride. It's not rocket science.
