He was one of the best stand-up comedians and was fantastic on SNL:

Norm Macdonald, whose laconic delivery of sharp and incisive observations made him one of Saturday Night Live‘s most influential and beloved cast members, died today after a nine-year private battle with cancer. He was 61.

Macdonald’s death was announced to Deadline by his management firm Brillstein Entertainment. The comedian’s longtime producing partner and friend Lori Jo Hoekstra, who was with him when died, said Macdonald had been battling cancer for nearly a decade but was determined to keep his health struggles private, away from family, friends and fans.

“He was most proud of his comedy,” Hoekstra said. “He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him. Norm was a pure comic. He once wrote that ‘a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.’ He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly.”

RIP Norm.

Sucks. Greg Giraldo was the king of the Comedy Central roasts....but Norm Macdonald's set during the Bob Saget roast is right up there. Funny dude. And 'Dirty Work' is a very underrated comedy.

Dang... I was watching David Spade's late show on Comedy Center a year or so ago. The guests that night were Norm, Dennis Miller, & Kevin Nealon. Norm was 59 or 60 battling cancer and still ran comedy circles around those guys. I suppose they had no idea...

No one could hilariously derail an interview like Norm. Watch all the way through to end.

That was a great episode.

I really liked "Light's Out". It was nice to see a late night show that dedicated absolutely ZERO time to politics. Just stick to the jokes guys.

I'm just bummed that I got axed from writing for the show due to a union issue. Ya, ya...poor me.

R.I.P. Norm was a guy I gave a second chance to and I'm glad I did. For whatever reason the first things I saw him doing didn't connect. With all the praise he got I took a second look and really came to appreciate the meandering style and out of left field endings.

On SNL Weekend Update, Norm was going to list the Top 5 worst jobs in America. Then he said "Let's just skip to #1, crack whore". He was very funny.

"Finally, according to the U.S. News & World Report 1997 Career Guide, the best job in the United States, for the second year in a row, is Interactive Business System Analyst. However, last year's worst job, Assistant Crack Whore, has been replaced by a new worst job: Crack Whore Trainee."

Go Norm!!
That was pretty inspirational. Thanks for posting that. I've been watching a lot of Norm tributes on youtube the last week. This seems to be consistent with what others have said about him.
