per Mizutani:

Gophers defensive backs coach Jay Sawvel has the task of figuring out how those pieces fit together. He said the intricacies of his coverage packages are still ironing themselves out.

"We know number one through five is right now with Jalen Myrick in that mix," Sawvel said. "We know who that group is. Now it's OK, 'Where is number six, seven, eight, nine and 10? Are they ready to play? Are they not ready to play?' That's what we're really trying to get to right now."

Sawvel is an old-school coach who has made a habit of developing players throughout his career. He never sugarcoats things. He's extremely hard on his players. He only praises someone if that someone truly deserves it.

"It's a good thing for us at the end of the day," Travis said of the tough-love approach. "I appreciate him for pushing us as hard as he does."

"It's one of those things where we always say coaching is like medicine," Sawvel added. "It doesn't always taste good, but it's meant to help. It's something where we're trying to constantly -- every day --pick out something. We have to get better at stuff. You can always get better at something."
