With Gary Parrish on vacation this week, it’s been more of a challenge to find relevant items to link to for the Skinny, but I will press on. We’ll start off with SLAM’s preseason rankings, with place the Gophers at #17 (ahead of Michigan and Illinois, behind Ohio State and presumably Purdue and Michigan State). It’s a solid write up on the team, but curiously has no mention of Trevor Mbawke.

One of the nation’s under the radar talents is Cal’s Patrick Christopher, who will look to lead the Golden Bears to great heights this season. Luke Winn recently interviewed him and gave us a glimpse into a unique basketball team. Between Christopher’s poetry and Jamal Boykin’s artwork, you get the idea it’s an atypical college basketball squad:

The John Wall hype is overwhelming, but a certain high school coach claims the other Kentucky freshman point guard is a better player; okay so it’s Eric Bledsoe’s high school coach, but nonetheless he sounds like quite the talent.

My wife and I are currently working our way through “The Wire” and while I’ve been watching this incredible show, I’ve wondered what David Simon (the creator) could do with the seamy world of college basketball. It’s not Simon, but Don Cheadle has reached an agreement with FX to produce a drama along those lines. I’m cautiously optimistic; Cheadle’s a favorite of mine and FX has cranked out some great shows (The Shield, Rescue Me) over the years. I just hope it can avoid the clichés that other TV shows/movies have fallen into with college sports:
