You can say what you want about Brewster but he not only is talking the talk, he is walking the walk. He truly believes (and so do I) what he is saying. He is not content with average recruiting; he goes after the best recruits and gets many of them. He is not content with a weak OOC schedule and a 2nd rate bowl game he is scheduling USC with the hopes of elevating this program to the upper echelon of the big ten. His goal is bigger is to win the big ten not just be competitive. I admire the guy for trying. I don’t understand people Claiming to be Gopher fans ripping everything about the program. Win lose or draw this is our team! They will never move, hold out for more money etc.

Depends on what you mean by crazy. It's funny. Reusse (who I think is a pretty good writer) decries Brewster for the cupcake schedule that Mason set up and now Sid thinks Brewster's crazy for scheduling USC. Can't win.

Generally, I think it's a good move. Shows we're serious about playing good teams and recruits know that these type of games get on national television. You might lose by 30, but at least everyone at home (and pro scouts at the game watching the USC guys) sees you.

When Brewster was hired: "We are going to take Gopher Nation to Pasadena."
2 years later, at a pep rally in Tempe, Arizona: "We do not want to be at the Insight Bowl. Gopher Nation doesn't want to be in Tempe. This is a stop along the journey to Pasadena."

I know a lot of people here get sick of hearing Brewster mention such high aspirations from everything regarding OC to Schedules to Recruits. The bottom line is Coach Brewster is one of the most positive people I have heard in a long time. I truly believe that he thinks he can take Gopher Nation to Pasadena, and since I think he believes it, he also makes me believe it. He said you need to play the best teams to get the best recruits... well we are playing USC.

Brewster can build a program I believe. This is one of my favorite Brewster quotes from last year's recruiting social: "They said to me, Coach Brew, you can't bring in these top 7 recruits vs. Ohio State. You have won one game this year, Ohio State is going to kill you. Well we brought in 7 recruits and we signed those 7 recruits because those 7 kids believe in what we can accomplish at the University of Minnesota."

A lot of people ripped Tubby for agreeing to play perennial powerhouse Louisville with an inexperienced team. How'd that one work out?

I don't remember anyone ripping Tubby for that. I do remember a ton of people ripping him for the rest of the schedule.

I love the schedule

To put it in a context most of us should be familiar with.... NDSU playing the Gophers.....

Those games are their "Rose Bowl" They realistically shouldn't have had even a ghost of a chance, but they came in and played two very good games and split the series......

All I'm saying is the underdog generally loves to play the big boys and it may or may not work out as a victoory, but just getting the chance to prove you belong on the same field is very motivating..... In this case, put the Gophers squarely in the same crosshairs that the Gophers and their fans put NDSU.

Let's go get em Boys!!!!!!!!

Good comparison.

As a guy elsewhere said earlier today: "Crazy is as crazy does."

I would not consider it crazy, but I would have liked to see it a couple of more years out - starting in 2012. That way it is on the schedule so the kids you are recruiting today would be redshirt juniors or seniors going into the first meeting. Sell them on the fact they would play USC at home in a few years. I think it would give us a better chance to win the game.

You look at who USC is getting in recruiting this year and it is sick, not just compared to the Gophers but almost everyone else. The have committments from about 10 of the top 100 rated kids in the country. I would just have liked to see the game out their a couple more years.

Perhaps the NDSU model should be followed

The team that came and played tough against Mason's Gophers was Junior heavy. When the came back the following year . . . It was one of the oldest most experienced teams in the country at any level of college football.

To a degree the Gophs may be bring that to the table, but to what end . . .I way they schedule and play these games.

It should have been that way but the talent level between the two programs was a lot closer than you think. NDSU was probably better than you think they were and Minnesota wasn't as good. To be honest, I think they had more talent than Minnesota in 2007.

I think it changes the conversations about Minnesota football which is important. I can't believe how many non-fans have mentioned the USC game to me in the last week. Scheduling USC at least makes the apathetic people take notice of what you're doing. That is a step closer to turning them in to fans.

So Cal

Well, we'll get a sense of how the program is progressing. My wife, not a Gopher fan, thinks that if given a weekend furlough OJ could hang 200 yards on us. Time will tell, but it sure has created a buzz among Minnesotans.

should've scheduled it for late november to show off our toughness in the cold for those fairy usc boys

This is a very good point. When the Gophers played NDSU, it was with primarily MAC level talent, which was barely a quarter-turn above NDSU's talent level. Playing USC is damn near like playing an NFL-caliber team. I'm not saying it's crazy to play them, but a Gopher upset of USC would be a much bigger deal than NDSU knocking off the Gophers.

If the game were being played in the dome

it might be crazy.
However, September is still technically summer. Depending upon when the game is played we could have a beautiful 70 degree sunfilled day. We could also have a 90 degree day with a dewpoint of 70.
Better yet we could have a cold front and a high of 50, rain coming down sideways with 30 mile an hour winds with gusts of 50. We could also have snow showers.
There are games that we could have won in the dome if weather was a factor.

Go Gophers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
