What if there was a committee or system in place to select what match ups are needed to determine the champion without including undeserving teams? For example this year Oregon would’ve just been selected champion as the only undefeated. Last year Michigan and Washington would play and FSU (lowest rated 0 loss team) and Texas (highest rated 1 loss team) would play. If FSU won they’d play the Michigan vs Washington winner. If Texas won, the Michigan/Washington winner would be crowned champion.

The NFL could follow suit. If KC wins on Sunday, they celebrate with the Lombardi Trophy in Denver. If they lose, they play either MN/DET in the Super Bowl.

Why make the Dodgers play all those extra games just to confirm what we knew from the regular season.

No offense, but I think this idea has been full baked and burnt to a crisp.

Nah, it’s more interesting to have different systems. It was different for 100 years and seemed to survive just fine.

Well, lets give this 12 team playoff some time and see what comes of it. This century I can only think of one or two examples where a team didn't get to compete for the NC when they should have.

If in 10 years we see some undeserving teams start getting into the NC game then maybe the old "burnt to a crisp" idea wasn't so bad. By undeserving, I mean something like Clemson going on a run, getting all the bounces, etc and end up in the NC game that NO 9-3 regular season team should be in.

I would be fine if MLB went back to the pre-1969 system, NL Champion vs the AL Champion.

As I understand in the olde days historically the goal was to win a (small, regional) conference, and talking heads elected a “national champion” based on _____. And people were fine with that, for awhile. But, people wanted to really know who the best of the best was/is. If there were European or South American or African amateur football teams it would similarly be pretty cool and fun to come together every year or every four years for a ”World Cup” competition to see who the best is.
