I read this as, he’s not a bad coach but nobody was handing over the checkbook to buy players cause he isn’t one of us. I suspect they probably have a commitment for some NIL money but only if you hire this guy we want. I have no insider info, but I suspect this might be the case.

I wouldn't be excited about Craig Smith, but I can't see any rationale argument that Craig Smith would be a worse option than Ben Johnson.

Yeah, don't think he would be viewed as a downgrade but would also be really tough to sell as an upgrade as well and unlikely be to someone that would inspire a big influx in pay for play money as well so if that was already a problem for him at Utah moving here isn't going to fix that.
