Another ridiculous column, devoid of facts, in a long line of them from Patrick.

But hey, at least he didn't drop any "******* Monkey rap" references when describing his recent outing watching Gopher Baseball!

I'm far from a Mark Coyle apologist, but what is he supposed to say? "We'd be pleased as punch just to not finish last every year."
The goal is to compete for championships. It might be a long-term goal, but that's the goal. It takes the right people and a lot of effort, but the notion that things can't change is ridiculous. There was a time when the only thing that people knew about Gonzaga basketball was that John Stockton played there.

I knew Gonzaga was Carl Pohald's alma mater, even before Dan Monson's run into the Final Four was stopped just short by Khalid El-Amin & Co.

"And now came Johnson — who never had a chance here with the resources provided to him."

I'm so tired of this. It's like no one is able to hold Johnson accountable as coach. It's everything else's fault, Coyle, the U, NIL. But never Johnson. The way people talk about him is like he's the greatest head coach, better than Coach K and John Wooden combined, he would have won Big Ten regular season and tournament titles and gone to the Final Four every year if only he had more NIL.

What really bothers Reusse more than anything as he points out in the article the majority of the dollars going to Fleck and his football program.

I doubt anyone despises Fleck more than Reusse.

It is possible for both to be true. Ben was not a great coach or recruiter. The athletic department did little or nothing to help him. They sat on their hands when the NIL era cranked up- they were late to the party and got burned. Look this University has been letting down coaches here for many, many years and the AD marches to the tune of the University leadership.

This. Passivity. While other schools had plans in place to hit the ground running when it was approved/go time, the U didn’t respond.

Reusse was wrong about Fleck’s sincerity and it still bothers Reusse.

You probably should read your crap before hitting the reply button because that is the least truthful and most asinine thing I've read here in at least 24 hours (I can't go longer than that because, after all, there is a constant stream of crap posted here).

You know what, you're right. It was over the top. I've been frustrated with some of the takes regarding Johnson but the post was excessive. It's just, I look at the record and am taken aback by commentary circulating.

There was no direction from the NCAA regarding how NIL would work. The SEC schools immediately went to pay their athletes. I would NEVER have imagined that the NCAA would simply look the other way. I am proud of the U for initially playing the NIL game the way it was supposed to work. Once it was clear what the new 'rules' were, the U moved quickly to catch up.

It's not always the U being the boogey-man. People can direct their NIL $ where they like. If you were a person that had enough money to donate to the Gophers NIL, would you send it to the football team, hockey team, volleyball team, etc. where there are legit, experienced coaches that have (generally) winning teams, or throw your money away on a dumpster fire basketball program that is lead by a guy that has zero interest in selling his own program? Yes, some NIL $ just goes into the general NIL fund that the U can distribute as it sees fit. But there is also a pile of money that is being directed by the donators. If the guy leading the ship doesn't want to sell the program and doesn't create much excitement, it's no wonder the NIL is lacking. Blanket blaming the U on the NIL deal is lazy and tired.

That leadership just gave him a $300k/year bump through 2030. Seems like his strategy of marching to their tune has been more than bountiful for the AD.

When posting your criticisms don’t forget to mention how old Reusse is! Speaking of age, the reference to John Kundla pretty much puts Gopher BB success in perspective.
With the writer devoid of credibility, in my opinion, I'm not wasting my time reading it

Reusse isn't wrong about anything he said regarding the factors that hurt Johnson.

The Barn is a dump, NIL sucks here, the fan base isn't great (due to years of ineptitude), etc.

Johnson still wasn't the right person for the job.

The University needs a plan for basketball.

Look at St. Thomas' Division 1 plan.

They're investing hundreds of millions, building facilities, courting donors, etc. And they're largely succeeding ahead of schedule.

The U has no plan or vision.

Where's the plan for a new arena? Where's the plan to fill the NIL coffers? Where's our GM?

All we have are words about hopefully spending on a new coach. That's not enough. Where's the infrastructure to support him?

If you want someone to hire from St. Thomas, it's not Tauer. It's Esten.
