I thought about bringing this up last year during our struggles from the perimeter. Is there not a guy already on campus (or a curreng HS senior) who could fill a role as a shooter for this team? Neither of the current walk ons (Dawkins and Halvorsen) are shooters and it would be great to have a guy who could come in and knock down open 3's, even if he couldn't do much else. The thread on Jordan Smith possibly walking on at Wisconsin (now looks to be going to St Louis) prompted me to bring this up. It would be nice to know that we had an option on the bench to put in to spread the court.

No. even when they have brought in lower level sharp-shooters (Esselink) they have struggled.

PS Why not recruit a shooter? Pretty much every other team has two or three of them.

Someone like an Esselink or Abu-Shamala is what I am talking about. We wouldn't have to give them as many minutes as they got under Monson, but they could possibly make a difference against certain teams.

Obviously a shooter that could do more than that would be ideal, but then they likely wouldn't be a walk on candidate. I don't think anyone would rather have Jesperson or Ogelsby than Andre Hollins or Joe Coleman from a talent standpoint, but I'd feel better with a shooter on the roster.

I don't know why people think Hollins isn't a shooter. All the early scouting reports pegged him as a spot up 2 guard. He is definitely known as a shooter he just happens to have expanded his game.

+1, he shot well in high school. Secondly, good teams have kids who can shoot, play defense, dribble, and pass.

I disagree. Joe Coleman may be a great kid, but there is very little about his game that excites me. He is a quintessential "tweener" with limited outside shooting ability. I would rather have Ogelsby or Jesperson in a heartbeat over Coleman; Hollins is legit though IMO. Of the four players, he's the best.

+1...I have said that all along. Coleman is a great athlete, but with his size and sketchy shooting, where do you play him? He is certainly not a true 2.

I would not discount Joe's ability to be a very strong contributor for the Gophers. He will need to improve his outside shot, but he should be very strong defensive player and is very explosive at getting to the basket. I saw him play against a very talented team from Chicago last fall and he just dominated the game. With Joe's athleticism, he didn't have to shoot from distance at the high school level. I expect his shot to improve with repitition as he shifts to the college game.

Coleman sounds like a better version of Chip. Tweener but a bit taller and better at shooting and defending. You aren't excited that he can create his shot/finish better than most of our current players (not that that's saying a ton)?

love Joe but

I've watch plenty of Joe and will say heck of a slasher/dunker create his own shot not so much

Joe's one of those guys who just finds a way to score and I'd be willing to bet he'll be the best on the team at finishing around the rim. He's not a great shooter right now, but he's not a terrible one either and in my opinion he has the type of shooting form that makes me confident that he can and will improve. As long as he's willing to put in the work, which I'm sure he is, he can have a very good career as a Gopher and be one of the core guys on a good Gopher team before it's all said and done. I'm excited to see what he can do at the next level and I'm very happy to have him on the team. Him and Andre are going to make a great tandem.
