How did those two part company? Anybody know if they are still on good terms?

It's a pipe-dream, but I am hoping Tubby retires or takes the USC gig....If he stepped down, could Teague link up with Shaka Smart again?

That would be sweet. I know it seems like a knee jerk reaction to last night's loss but I'm definitely ready for Tubby time to end. He just hasn't gotten it done with plenty of time and it's time to move on. Not gonna happen though.

I think we have to stick it out through the class of 2014 and see if any of the recruits sign. If we bring in a new coach even for next year there will be no history between the kids and the new coach and I think the U misses out on Tyus, Rashad, and Reid.

If Tubby misses on them and the Gophers have a few bad years then maybe we start to shop.

I think if we were to hire MR Smart this spring, there would be a better chance to sign Tyus, Rashad and Reid. Problem is there is about a one in a million chance of that happening.

You people act like bringing in Shaka Smart will be a guarantee of success?! We don't know if he can win in the Big Ten. The Big Ten is a WAY tougher conference than the one he's coaching in right now.

Remember, Tubby had a pretty decent resume before coming here.

Shaka just signed extension at vcu. I know contracts don't mean Jack if the money was right, but he turned down multiple big time schools (Illinois and a few others that don't come to mind) . My gut says he isn't leaving this year and Norwood knows that. Tubby will get a chance to seal the deal with the 2014 class to get some hype at a minimum. That's all being said with the assumption we continue to struggle on the road and finish 6th.

I personally think and hope and expect the gophs to turn it around and tubby retires a gopher after the 2014 - 2015 recruiting hotbed cools down.

The only things I feel could give MN a remote shot is the new AD and Madison's (his hometown) proximity to Minneapolis, but Chicago has that as well.

It's early to be talking about this, but not too early. First, this season could still go either way in a big way. This team is too good to keep playing like this, and I don't think they will. But considering they were a top-10 team and playing every bit like one, anything short of a Sweet 16 berth in the Tourney would be at least a little disappointing. Anything short of the round of 32 would be greatly disappointing. We'll cheer for better, but a disappointing finish is a real possibility. Add that to a losing conference record in Coach Smith's tenure. And I'm going to say it: without Trevor and Rodney next year, and even with the Hollins' playing at a high level, next season will be a down year. It's unrealistic to expect players who are unreliable reserves this year to step in a play solidly as starters next year. IF we have a disappointing finish to this season and a down year next season, and we miss on all three of the local studs (god forbid, but a significant possibility), there may be significant pressure to do something about the direction of the program.

Putting aside the prospect of bringing Shaka Smart to Minnesota - which may or may not be feasible or realistic - if Norwood Teague can find a remarkable young coach such as Smart once, he can do it again. There are always plenty of great young coaching prospects available; you just have to know how to evaluate them and find the right one.

Well.... we know that Tubby can't win in the Big Ten. Might as well give someone else a try. They can't be any worse.

I know it's a pipe dream, but if Tubby's gone, I want Dungy, now that Trestman's unavailable.

The buzz around Shaka Smart coming off another deep run for VCU will be off the charts. He'll be courted by every major program with an inkling of making a change. The advantages for Minnesota are Teague (Presuming he and Shaka parted on good terms) AND the 2014 guys who are all considering Minnesota. I have to believe that the Gophers have a better shot of keeping them home with a fresh, new superstar coach.

There are nine or ten million reasons why Tubby isn't going anywhere.

Moses, don't slip him a mickey, OK?

Couple a more recruiting trips to Eastern Europe, looking for the next 6-8 sharp-shooter and the Smirnoff will do its job. I'm so glad Oto quit shooting 3's....Now if we get him to shooting 2's....

I don't see how that would be the case, especially since we've been on both Vaughn and Jones since they were in the 8th grade and have been developing relationships with them for 3 years now. Shaka Smart or not, it seems very unlikely to me that any of these three kids would choose to stay home to play for a coach that they don't know based mostly on reputation, especially with all of the other top coaches in the nation have been talking to them for the past couple years. I have no idea how any of these kids feel actually feel about it, but in my opinion the only way we get any of them is if Tubby is here next year and beyond.

You are assuming that they like Tubby. What if the U brought in a coach who didn't blame everyone else every time there was a problem and who could attack a 1-3-1 defense used by a very slow team.

Illinois was a mess when they tried to bring in Shaka and got turned down by much lesser names than Smart (think Maturi/Mona football search) before hiring Groce.

I would guess that the previous relationship with Norwood would be be appealing to Shaka, especially if Norwood brings the $$$ and a vision to make this a basketball school. It doesn't seem likely on paper, but I don't think it's any less likely than Minnesota losing to Northwestern last night.

I think we could get him, I don't think we could or should after this year regardless of this years results. Have to give tubby a chance to keep the instate talent home again.

After watching that fiasco in Evanston do you think any guard would wanna come play for Tubby? His track record of developing players is not good. Rondo only became Rondo after 5 years with Doc Rivers teaching him the ropes. We've seen player after player come through Tubby's program, only to see them leave with minimal or no improvement. Rodney has actually regressed this season compared to how he finished last season. Sampson regressed so badly, he was eventually benched for EE. Many others like Al Nolen who had injuries but a strong case can be made that Nolen peaked as a Freshmen or Sophomore in the win over Louisville.

Why would any player wanna come play for Tubby anymore? If I had NBA aspirations, I certainly wouldn't choose Tubby.

I'm assuming it doesn't matter how any new coach attacks a 1-3-1, a 2-3, a 3-2, a 2-1-2, a 2-2-1, a 3-1-1, a 1-1-3, a 2-1-2, a 2-1-1-1, a 1-1-2-1, a 1-1-1-2, a 1-1-1-1-1, or a 1-2-1-1. I'm also assuming it doesn't matter if a new coach takes the blame every missed shot, bad pass, and defensive lapse. A new coach means we have no shot at any of the big 3 kids from Minnesota in 2014, I assume.

How about Andre Hollins? Just because he had one bad game you're going to dismiss is significant improvement from this time last year? Hollins was backing up Welch at this time last year, now he's coveted as one of best PG in the B1G, which happens to be THE conference this year. I think you're pulling the trigger a little early. It was one game. A little over a month ago, 'Dre dropped 41 against a ranked team (Memphis).

I don't think any of these three are going to rule us out because of last night. And as far as playing for Tubby goes, they very well may look at everything you said and choose not to come here but if it were solely based on those players you named then we would already be out. Either way, my point is that if Tubby gets fired, not one of the three kids will want to start over their evaluation process of the U under a new coach when they have been evaluating other top coaches and programs for the past couple years. Why would Tyus, already debating between Izzo and coach K, decide to stay home to play for a coach he doesn't know, even if it is Skaka Smart (who is very unlikely to be the replacement if Tubby goes)? We at least have a chance at landing these guys with Tubby because we have gotten to this point in the recruiting process.

Sounds like Monson

Almighty Shaka down in 2nd half vs Richmond while Richmond doesn't have their best player.
