Could Bateman opt back in????

Not as things currently stand. Since he signed with an agent, his remaining eligibility was nullified.

However PJ is reaching out to Bateman. Probably with a "Hey, the B1G is playing and here are the safety measures in place. If the NCAA would allow it, would you want to come back?" type message. I am sure there are some other players who opted out and signed with an agent that may try to push for the opportunity to play.

Honestly, with the concessions the NCAA has already made about "This year is so far from normal, we're making exceptions to rules" I would not be surprised if that say "Players who opted out due to a delayed or cancelled season that is now going to happen can play this year if they do X, Y, and Z". Will that happen? I'd give it about a 50:50 chance right now.

They would probably require players to say they are opting back in before a certain date, and that any contracts sign be put on pause until the season is over.

My question about opting back in.... I suspect these guys aren't in classes / still in school...

They get to play even if they not coming top play school?

Opt back in sure that seems fine, but these guys would then sort of have this situation where they're not actually in school... that is a bit more wonky / sticky.

He clearly would be in shape. Has signed with an agent however I wasn't aware of the ongoing discussion placed above. My thought is that he hasn't done anything academically I believe for a while so is he may be goofed up for that reason.

Yeah, although I imagine they could get him into classes where he could catch up from a few weeks. In the end, I'll be pretty shocked if he comes back. Although, it looks like he is definitely still around the Twin Cities from his Instagram

If he's in the twin cities still, I don't see why he wouldn't still be enrolled. It is a long time until draft day, and even not playing he could still get injured in workouts (however unlikely) or catch covid (however unlikely) which could screw up his participation in the draft next spring. If that were to happen, he would be stuck in a situation where now an NFL career is a question, but he doesn't have a degree to fall back on.

Doubt it...get stronger, save his body, to work towards a career in NFL and get paid.

He may if Winfield and Johnson comes back for another year. 😆🙄

If he pays back all the money he has been advanced by the agent, he would be eligible

Didn't he opt out prior to the season being delayed? I doubt he's coming back. Covid issues are still a reality....and I believe that's part of the reason why he opted out in the first place. He has asthma....which is definitely one of those health concerns that makes covid quite a bit more dangerous.

Winner, winner, Chicken Dinner.

Someone also noted that he was posting social media from what looked like CA, where his gf is from?

So would not be surprised if he had moved out of Minn at some point in the late spring/early summer.

I think his GF is from South Dakota.

Even players who have signed with agents can go through the student-athlete reinstatement process to try and regain their eligibility, according to ESPN's Tom VanHaaren.

Apologize if this has been referenced already...Per this article, there is a way for players who have signed with agent to regain their eligibility. One would have to imagine with the circumstances, the NCAA would be extra lenient in allowing players to return (never mind the fact that it makes their product better). If Bateman is holding out due strictly to personal health concerns, then more power to him. However, it would seem there is a path back if he so chooses.

Thanks for sharing this.

Wonder what the stipulations are, regarding impermissible benefits. Let's say for example that his agent lent him $100k and he has already bought a car, clothes, necklace/watch, etc. You can't possibly expect that he has to give all that up, sell it, or whatever. Seems messy.

And if he isn't enrolled by now? Did he even finish class in the spring semester? Guessing he did not take class in summer semester, so might be off-track for degree progress (though I know the NCAA relaxed that for this school year).

Although these are different times, reports are that he has accepted money, has been training under the guidance of his agent. He has therefore received extra benefits that other student athletes are not able to receive. His original reason was COVID, not the cancellation. If memory serves me right, he opted out even before the cancellation. He made his choice, signed on the dotted line, knew he forfeited his eligibility. Time to move on. I know everyone in our state wants to watch him play. But if this was a Wisconsin or Iowa kid, we would all be saying he in ineligible.
