If I was the head coach and had a committed player I would discourage him from playing in these meaningless all-star games. We already know you are a star player. Now Coughlin got hurt in his US Army game.

Gophers update: Coughlin to have shoulder surgery; Maye joins Murray as Senior Bowl invitees
By Joe Christensen
After a standout week at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, incoming Gophers recruit Carter Coughlin is taking care of some health matters.

The Eden Prairie senior confirmed Thursday that he suffered a concussion in that game Saturday, and he’s also scheduled to have shoulder surgery in coming days.

The surgery will repair a partially a partially torn labrum. Coughlin said he should be able to resume upper-body lifting exercises in 3-1/2 months and resume hitting in five to six months. He anticipates being back at full strength for the start of the Gophers’ training camp in August.

Analysts pegged Coughlin as one of the top performers in the practices leading up to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which is a national showcase for recruits. Coughlin is a consensus four-star recruit and headlines this year’s Gophers recruiting class.

He'll be back by August. If you're going to say he has a degenerative shoulder or something now, he'd have hurt it early on in his career here anyways.

Best of luck to him. I hope his surgery and recovery go well. And if he can resume upper body work in 3 and half months, hopefully he will be fine. He can condition, work on lower body work in the mean time. This is January 14, he will be lifting again in April. He has all summer to be healed and ready for August which is well within his 6 months for hitting.

With all the medical improvements in orthopedics and muscle stimulation. He will be fine.

Not good..

It's football..people get hurt...but probably the more troubling injury is the concussion. Not great news at all.

Inside info - the shoulder surgery was planned, nothing worse happened during the game.

The concussion is something different.

Heal up young man!! Can't wait to see him play in the fall.

Yeah I didn't want to minimize the concussion. That is never a good thing.

Ouch! He should be able to fully recover and be fine, but it will take some time. If the Gopher coaches knew about the injury I would be surprised if they gave him the green light to play in the US Army All American Bowl! Maybe the surgery is the same even with further injury.

I suspect it was a case that playing wasn't going to worsen the condition and it wouldn't greatly affect his availability date. Very few people want to be recuperating from surgery over the holidays so his actual surgery date probably wasn't affected by more than two weeks.

No need to worry. The season is over, as long as he follows the directions of the doctor about the concussion it shouldn't be an issue. Most issues come when you try to get active again to quickly and don't let it heal fully. Coughlin is smart enough to know healing fully and properly before august, even if it means he has to build up strength again, is better than trying to stay active and re-injuring himself or causing reoccurring issues.

I had a torn labrum at work two years ago and I only got about 70% of my strength back in my right shoulder... of course im in my thirties, but I hope he heals better than I did.

Let the labrum heal Carter, they are tricky and you want it healthy the rest of your life.

Had the same thing. It's a terrible injury with a high rate of re-injury. I think I was told it was as high as 20% just because getting cartilage to heal and it being a very vulnerable joint. The recovery sucks. Essentially immobile for 8-9 weeks and at that point you can not raise your arm above you waist while keeping it straight. It was 4 months until I was finally cleared. Luckily I had a good physician. My doc is one the current Vikings team docs. I'm glad I went through it because it's better than frequently dislocating your shoulder to the point where there is a notch in your humorous.

Since this was a "partial" tear, which he had been playing with... wondering if it is any "less" a concern than the situation you describe? We are going to want this guy on the field for 4 years.
