During our time in the Big 12 Conference, OU had a significant edge over A&M. The Aggies, having moved to the SEC, now have something to prove during our first contest against former Big 12 foes. We need to put the icing on top of the cake for a season that silences the critics of our move.
More than a team, there are individuals who have something to prove.
Our coaches McKinney and Beatty will have to prove they are worth a possible promotion with the departure of OC Kliff Kingsbury. Defensive standout
Damontre Moore as well as
Luke Joeckel and Jake Matthews have to prove that they are first round draft picks. The Aggies have to prove that they are capable at winning a game at Jerryworld, an environment that neutralizes the effect of the 12th Man. Johnny Manziel needs to prove that he has earned the Heisman Trophy.
This Aggie team is good, but it also has the heart and spirit to finish the job and to face adversity. We've had great teams the past several years, but they never seemed to be able to get over the hump.
The Sooners know we're good, but also
have a chance to best us yet again. At the end of the day, I think A&M just has
more invested in this game.
Sumlin and Stoopes are
old colleagues, and know each others' systems well. I expect to see a real coaching showdown at this game. There will also be a real effort by each team to contain and limit the QBs. Landry Jones has developed into a definite threat, albeit one that is less dangerous and more predictable than Manziel.
Here are some Media Day quotes and interviews from Coach Sumlin and some of the players.
I say A&M wins in a game that is much closer at times than I want to admit or watch. My biggest worry is our field goal kicking. If the game or our lead comes down to a FG or PAT, we may be in danger.
I have a free ride to the game, including tickets, stay at the team hotel, reception with the team, dinner with A&M VIPs, Midnight Yell access, and the pregame tailgate, so I will try to post a few pictures from the experience for everyone to see.
