Complete pandemonium breaks out at HS game after 80 foot buzzer beater w/ .5 seconds

I saw that yesterday on Good Morning America as their Play of the Day.

I can totally see a ref calling a technical foul on the crowd and ending the game. Now that would have been a video to see.

Those kind of shots are great fun. I've always said the kids should do more of them.

So did they win? Might be an awkward if they lost in OT...

isn't that supposed to be the automatic ruling? or is it ok since it's after regulation? jw if anyone happens to know

Even if it was called, wouldn't it technically be assessed in overtime, so they'd get a FT to start the period?

I think so. I would certainly have called something there.

Bad, didn't you see the crowd? You call something on that shot and you would be just another nasty knockout video on YouTube.

Yep. The question is, and I'll have to look in the rule book to find out, when is the technical foul administered? When are the free throws, with 0.0 left on the clock, or to start OT?

RULE 5-6-2, Exception 4:

If a technical foul occurs after the ball has become dead to end a quarter or extra period, the next quarter or extra period is started by administering the free throws. This applies when the foul occurs after any quarter has ended, including the fourth quarter, provided there is to be an extra period. If there is no way to determine whether there will be an extra period until the free throws are administered, the free throws are attempted immediately, as if the foul had been part of the preceding quarter.

My emphasis placed in bold.

So by my reading, A) a technical foul against the home bench is assessed, B) the court should have been cleared, and C) the visiting team's shooter is put on the line for two free throws. Make either of them and the game is over.

That's only if the refs weren't in the middle of the huddle jumping with the fans...

I read that differently. If the team shooting free throws would need the free throws to send the game to overtime, they would be shot before overtime. The ball was dead after the quarter and it's going to an extra period as there is a tie, the free throws are shot at the start of the overtime.

What if it is one point deficit, so they need to shoot the free throws. They get two free throws. Can they make them both to win the game, or are they done shooting after they make the first to tie?

They get to shoot for the win.

i like the guy at about 17-18 seconds in running onto the court with his crutches held high in the air. The healing powers of an 80ft buzzer beater.
