Team of the Year (Team with the best against the spread record in the nation): Bowling Green Falcons
Bowling Green won a second Mid-American Conference championship in three years by pummeling the majority of its opponents. The Falcons’ dominance extended to the sports books, where they went 10-3 against the spread. They beat the point spread by an average of 16 points per game...
Overachievement Award (Team that furthest eclipsed its over/under preseason win total): Iowa Hawkeyes
There’s no surprise here. Iowa joined Clemson as the only teams to finish the regular season 12-0, before losing to Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship Game. No one saw that type of season coming for the Hawkeyes, including oddsmakers...
Covering Streak of Excellence (Team that holds the longest against the spread winning streak): Virginia Cavaliers
Bettors might be the only group sad to see Virginia coach Mike London fired, as he was 8-3-1 against the spread in his final season despite going 4-8 straight-up...
Bettors’ Choice (Team that made the most money for gamblers through point-spread victories: Oklahoma Sooners)...
Bookmakers’ Choice (Team that made the most money for the house through point-spread victories): Arkansas Razorbacks
No division in college football has teams more popularly bet on a weekly basis than the SEC West. Alabama, LSU and Auburn annually are among the most gambled-on sides in college football. Arkansas beat the number against all of them...
Underdog of the Year (Team that performed most exemplary with the odds stacked against it): Michigan State Spartans
Plenty of worthy candidates exist, but only one can consummate the nomination by saying it led them directly into the college football playoff. Michigan State, which was 25-to-1 to win the national championship at the beginning of the year, won outright in its only two games as underdogs. The Spartans infamously beat in-state rival Michigan 27-23 as 7.5-point underdogs on a blocked punt during the final play of the game. A month later, they beat Ohio State on a last-second field goal while taking 14.5 points on the betting line. At odds of 7-to-1 to win the title and as a 9.5-point underdog to Alabama, Michigan State is the long shot of college football’s final four. But that might be right where the Spartans are comfortable.
