Coach's Poll: 24, ESPN Power Rankings: 24, USA Today Poll: 24, AP: Clueless Souhans!

AP no Likey Goldie... That is for sure.

62 voters in the coaches and we got 147 votes, meaning a handful of coaches likely had us ranked around # 20 or 21.

60 voters in the AP and we got 61 votes. Not much respect from the media.

Maybe the coaches poll ranking is slightly inflated because coaches respect Kill so much?

The difference is that the coaches generally have a more national, current view of things.

It is more likely that the coaches view this years team, while the AP voters mostly just still associate "Minnesota" with the Brewster-era teams. The AP voters always bring an intense regional bias to their voting.

Unfortunately, we are still in that spot where we are really tough to evaluate. We have no losses to any teams outside the top 10. At the same time we have no wins against any team receiving votes in either major poll. That suggests that we are somewhere between the 11th and 35th best team in the country, with no games against anyone in that range to use for evaluation. Hopefully, we keep winning and keep climbing.

Do many coaches watch many games beyond game film and scouting? I have no problem with the AP. It's great beating the teams we "should" beat but we haven't yet slayed any giants. Let's finish beating the teams from the "I" states before we get indignant. Let's remember, the B1G West isn't exactly well respected outside the upper Midwest.

this. i'd trust the media before i'd trust the coaches. there is no way the coaches are watching film of other teams in order to fill out a ballot. consider this, oregon beat msu and msu is two spots ahead of oregon.

that is not to say that the i trust the ap for accurate rankings either, it is just better than the coaches ballot.

Neither poll is worth the cost to print it out. Unfortunately in NCAA football polls have been used in the past to determine champions. Now we have an even smaller group deciding champions.

I pay no attention to the polls. All I look at is our Gophers are 6-1, 3-0 atop the B1G West.

If we're ranked, fine. If we're not ranked, fine. Besides, I am always rank.

GO GOPHERS!!!

I would rather have that small group selecting the 4 CFP teams (+ the top 25) than either the coaches or media. Much rather take my chances with the selection committee's biases than the coaches or media's.

I agree that the rankings are often over-valued. But GH seems to be excited about TCF Bank being packed and casual fans hopping on the bandwagon. Local media up their coverage when the Gophers are ranked, and when the Gophers get more coverage locally the casual fans interest increases.

Maybe the media poll ranking is slighting MN because they are by and large clueless.

The exact opposite was said when the AP showed more respect to the basketball team two years ago.

People just say whatever makes them feel better. 24 or 28, it really doesn't matter what we are. It's nice to have a ranking, but I'd rather be 3-0. With so many teams, and so much subjectivity, I'm surprised the two polls are as close as they are.

I don't disagree with anything you're saying. Just being a little sarcastic about the speculation being made about any of the polls. Yes, it's nice to be ranked but as we all know, the final poll is the only one that really matters. Until then, I'll continue with my reckless comments.

We really haven't beaten anyone yet....hard to rank us higher.

I am also waiting to see if we can perform against the real test of the west (IA, WI, NE). When we win 2 of 3 and win the west, then I'll both celebrate like crazy and expect us to be ranked in the top 20.

Wasn't there a coach once that admitted that he didn't actually vote in the poll? It was someone in his staff submitting the ballot.
