I have calmed down since the original hiring of Coach Kill and am warming up to him. I was pretty upset with how the search was handled by Maturi but I am over it. I am one of the Masonites who didn't like Brewster almost from the start because he couldn't coach football games or develop players. He could recruit somewhat but even that went sour as he lost more and more games. Mason couldn't develop players but was suspect when it came to recruiting and game management at times as well. Moving on I think Coach Kill will be able to develop players and hopefully manage games as well and I like his focus on the run. My main concern is that he will not be able to recruit. I hope I am wrong because storming the field against Iowa is way more fun than losing. Speaking of focus on the run...the UMD championship game is starting on ESPN2 right now.

Welcome back, I was a Mason supporter too, but cooled on him when I met him and had to listen to him basically say we did not deserve a better team. Right or wrong, it was a stupid way to sell increased commitment. He was a good coach and smart guy, but he never put himself out for the U. I do give him a lot of credit for being the first guy to have the guts to talk about an on-campus stadium. He deserves a lot of credit for that.
Brewster knew recruiting, but apparently that was mostly what he knew. But he fell in love with stars his first two years here. I actually liked his last two classes better than the highly rated second class. The last two classes will stay in school and improve as players through their careers. He just was not ready to make BCS level direction decisions. Too bad.
I like Kill, so far it is obvious he does not screw around and has a clear plan for what he wants to do. That is a big deal, and so is having coordinators who agree with him.

I still can't believe Joel Matruri still has a job after the way he handled all this. Continue's to show the U of M has serious internal issues. I like Kill and am excited about his staff, but as of right now it's more because I love Gopher Football. I have a feeling Kill will turn us into a winner, but at the same time I had the feeling we would win 8 games last year. I'm only giving credit when credit is due.

Honestly, how many of us truly know how Maturi handled it and how many were simply reacting to the latest tweet or gossip (oops...sports) columnist or who quoted someone supposedly in the know or had agenda like the savegopherfootball guy who all of a sudden became Leach's tool (friend)? ..... Okay, Maturi did botch it with the Tubby hire comment, but should he post everything he did and every person he showed interest in on GH.

From everything I have read of Leach, including the memo leaks posted on this board, Leach was only looking for some sort of leverage. He was only using MN either to advance his lawsuits or would have used it as a stepping stone to get somewhere else...(think Holtz's leaving was hard on the U back in the 80s?)

Maturi was interviewing coaches that had present positions and were currently playing games. If news leaked out they had interviewed for MN, it very well could have aggravated their own locker room. And to have supposedly a righteous indignation over the supposed meeting with coaches without the schools knowing about it. Sorry, but that does not pass the sniff test and even if it did, I have no doubt it is hardly unheard of.

Did it take awhile...well, yea, but see above active coaches comment.

And how many of the other schools listed actually got the "A" list coach they may have wanted?
Most of the schools have resorted to hiring a coordinator or someone with less of a resume then Kill.

We want the best for the UofM, but I have to accept the fact the nation in general sees the MN opportunity as no different then Indiana.

btw - this is not meant as a slam against Doogie. He qualified his confidence in the various info well enough, IMO. If it was simply something he heard or if he felt his sources were respectable, he would always make mention of it.

+1 Well said. Let's move on to do what we can to help Coach Kill and Gopher Football.

I think coach Kill is a lot like Mason in rebuilding programs, but I think he will out work Mason. Coach Kill might be the right guy for the job.

Let's Get It Done with the Kill Guy

We got a good guy. The other hires around the country are pretty clear evidence it was not an easy task for even "more attractive" destinations.
