What would you like to see in his offense? Will Gray be able to fit into the style that Kill run.

From everything I've seen, this is the type of offense Gray was born to run. Option spread, power running with both QB and RBs, pass when you need to.

It's going to be a beautiful, beautiful thing.

many, many touchdowns, a couple of 1000 yard rushers, a 1000 yard reciever and a qb that throws it for 3k+ and runs for 500+. Anyone else think of anything we would like to see in his offense?

This offense really does suit Gray pretty well. It's a power running spread offense, and it should fit him pretty well. The only real concerns I have as far as personnel is if the offensive lineman we have recruited will be a perfect fit. I'm not saying they won't be, but I imagine there will be a little more adjustment needed with them.

Northern Illinois has a couple 10 minute clips on youtube (against us and Illinois) that shows their offense, and it's kind of a neat offense in that it isn't anything like Dunbar's schemes. They run a lot of pistol, offset I out of the shotgun, and their lineman still fire off the ball like what you'd think from a non-spread team.

This offense is basically built for someone like Gray. Very similar to Oregon actually, just replace the small scat backs with All purpose backs.

Oh I cannot freaking wait for next season. I am already about as excited as can be. :D

Did NIU have an athletic QB, on the caliber of Gray? Or was it mostly the RB getting the carries?

Kill's offense requires a very athletic QB. The odd man out seems to be Moses. Gray, Parrish, and Pride all fit in very well. They do run a lot, but Kill is not stubborn and is very willing to throw down field when they feel they have set up the D. More QB movement than Mason, and more down field passing than Mason.

What does this hire do to the commitment of Max Shortell? He's not exactly a quick, athletic qb either. He's more in the Moses mold from what I have gathered.

GI had a tweet saying he was very impressed with Kill after speaking with him.

Chandler Harnish is very athletic, and a really good QB in my opinion. He rushed for 700+ yards this season, and averaged 6 yards a pop. He also hit well over 60% of his passes, 2200 yards, 20 TDs and 5 INT's.

Is the offense he's been running at NIU similar to what he's done throughout his career? He said he like to throw a lot of things out there, does anyone know how flexible he's been in the past with adapting to the talent he has in front of him?

I just looked at the game log of NIU and it looked like the QB got most of his rushing yards against weak opponents in big chunks, but was shut down against better teams. In general that is. I could be wrong in my observation. How athletic compared to Gray would you say their QB was? I missed that game...babysitting the Nieces and watching cartoons!

Harnish was smart and athletic, but has nowhere near the speed or physicality Gray brings.

Gray is a better athlete but that goes for about just about every single QB in the country. Harnish is a good QB though, he is accurate, makes good decisions, and pretty athletic in his own right. He'd probably kind of comparable to Persa from Northwestern.

Harnish had some nice games against some of their better opponents too (Illinois (130 yards), Temple (75 yards), etc.).

Yeah Persa is a good comparison. Lets just say athletically, Harnish is more similar to Weber than he is to Gray.

So you guys are thinking that Gray could feasibly put up better rushing numbers than did Harnish? I doubt he could equal his passing numbers, at least accuracy wise TD/INT.

Their QB at NIU was reasonably athletic, but they actually used their backup similarly to how MG was used the last few games of this season (and the year before) - sparingly, and out of the shotgun formation running speed draws (and was practically a lock to get five yards - watching him the few plays he played against Miami reminded me of how Purdue's 3rd string QB played against us this year).

What will be nice with MG is that he won't have to come out - EVER (hopefully).

I wondered about Shortell as well, along with Alipate and Parish for that matter. I don't know anything, really, about Parish, but Alipate needs to lose about 20lbs, and Shortell - I'm not sure if he is all that suited for this offense either. That said, Kill could find another athlete to bring in for running plays, as he did for NIU this year.

If he sticks with his committment, although recruited by Brewster to be a tight end despite being a QB in high school, I think Matt LaCosse could honestly be used as a QB in this offense. I'm not sure if he throws the ball at the Big Ten level, but he is a load as a runner that has some decent speed.

I think you are wrong. He had 117 yards against Illinois, 149 against a good MAC team in Toledo, and 71 against another solid MAC team in Temple.

Possibly, Gray is a talented runner. He will also be playing against tougher competition, so while he is a better runner than Harnish, those numbers might not really indicate it as much because he is playing against better defenses.

Yeah, the passing numbers will be really hard to duplicate. I doubt he will be as accurate as Harnish or even as good of a decision maker. We'll see what he can do throwing the ball, but yeah I agree with you duplicating Harnish's passing numbers in the Big 10 is a pretty lofty expectation.

It's tough to say because of the competition we face. If he had NIU's schedule, Gray would be a 1,000 yard rusher. I look at this situation similar to the Nevada team. Kaepernick was a great runner, and that alone made them a good offense. As his senior season rolled around, and he got more confidence in the offense, his passing abilities really took off. If I had to guess, I would say Gray does something like this, this season.

1,800 Passing yards, 11 tds
850 rushing yards, 7 tds

With the rest of our offense obviously going to the RBs.

Until Gray has graduated, there is no doubt they will utilize him to the best of their abilities. Remember, they want to recruit more QB's like Gray so expect him to be the rock in the offense.

Parish is a pretty athletic QB. He should fit into Kill's system just fine. I wouldn't be suprised if he's backing up Gray heading into next year.

Gray has got to be happy with this hire - especially if he was listening to the presser where Kill gushed over him and talked about how his system requires an athletic QB. I don't think Kill will be mistaking him for a WR anytime soon.

I am feeling better about this hire now, knowing how its suits Gray. Thanks for all the info guys.

Where are you seeing these? Cant seem to find much from this last year.

From the sounds of it, he loves an athletic QB, and Gray is exactly that.

Our O is going to stroke the post. That's all a guy can ask for.
