Coach Jerry Kill impressed us all at tonight's Goal Line Club Meet and Greet:

1) Introduced Thomas Hammock, and gave credit where credit is due--"We looked at the position he coaches and looked at the players he has coached. They are the kind of men and kind of players we want. He is a great recruiter."

2) Taked about scholarship deficit--"We are losing scholarships through grades and transfers. It will take time to get the back."

3) "Culture Shock"--players must check in every morning between 7:00 and 9:30 and eat breakfast provided by team. Classroom checks. No cell phones in football facility. Must report to tutors.

4) "We will recruit and train for speed and strength. We look at intelligence and maturity first."

5) "We need better strength and conditioning."

6) "I like to recruit a player for a year, we are having to get to know these kids in three weeks."

7) Spring Practices will all be open. No word on fall practice. Victory Walk remains intact.

8) "Loyalty breeds success. I expect a 110% effort all the time, I give 110% all the time."

9) "MarQuies is an exceptional talent. He has one of the best QB coaches in the nation to bring him up to speed. When we recruited him for a short period (at NIU), we thought of him as a great thrower."

That's all I remember. Others can add to it. Go Gophers.

My favorite points in bold above - thanks for sharing!

Strength and conditioning

:

5) "We need better strength and conditioning."

I find it interesting that this is a big factor and considered a weakness from the former staff. I don't doubt this may be the case, but who remembers how bad Brewster stated this was from Mason's former regimen? At the time, Brewster stated (if I remember correctly) that he wanted guys to clean 300 lbs + as a gauge of the overall strength of the players and the team. There were less than 5 guys who could do this when he took over, and then his strength coach (Mark Hill) had the number over 30+ guys in the first year. Mark Hill has subsequently been hired right away in the same capacity at IU. Apparently Klein is going to push and get much more than Hill, - as Kill appears to recognize this as a necessity.
I'm just sort of curious if this is the reality, or if new coaches always seem to perceive this as an issue with the guys they inherit?

Good points. I just think that Klein and Kill have a vision that has worked for them for years and that is what they want to accomplish here.

same question

I'm curious about gopherfield's question too. Seems like a common theme for coaches to come in and say we're going to turn things around with strength and conditioning. Was the last staff handing out doughnuts and rolls for breakfast? Is there really going to be a noticeable difference?? At this level, I would think anything less than 110% isn't going to cut it. How many ways can you bench, clean, squat, etc.? On that same note, will S&C coaches get credit when we start running over people?

No doubt Hill helped field some strong guys, but the conditioning wasn't there. Those muscles need to be working in the 4th quarter. Think about all the games we lost in the 4th quarter. He also brought up injuries and their root cause of poor conditioning. He said in the prior to their arrival at NIU I think he said there were 25+ guys who missed out on playing time due to injury. This past year, 2.

I'm liking this hire more and more. Maturi=the proverbial blind squirrel.

One more: the website(s) cost us a recruit.
Side note: the photos that were for sale were awesome!

He basically said some incorrect information influenced a recruit's decision to go elsewhere. He did not appear to be happy about it. He also said they're in some big recruiting battles right now.

And they announced last night that the program hired Mike Sherels as special assistant to the head coach. We talked with him and he's really excited about the staff, the program and the opportunity to provide his experience as a past player to help the current players.

Personally, my favorite moment last night was when a little girl asked him during the Q&A if he would autograph something for her. He was very cool about it, said they were beautiful like his daughters and said he would be happy to sign for them.

Go Gophers!

Interesting. What website is he talking about?

I always thought playforbrew.com was a herky jerk website. Took forever to load up and many links/pages did not work.

No specific site was mentioned or was it elaborated on.

He was talking about a "star ratings" question and recruiting websites at the time. There was some intonation (my interpretation) that these sites (their writers) are paid to give players stars and guide players into certain decisions. Interesting.

I hope we get rid of all the Puss Guts. Maybe they were strong, but most weighed to much with FAT.

Who are the pussguts that you are referring to? I can only think of a couple guys last year that we would really consider overweight....Edwards? Wills? Both of them are gone. We had a much bigger problem with being undersized than we did with being oversized.

Awesome stuff.

In the other thread about the Meet 'n Greet, I heard that Kill was asked questions about everything.. Including uniforms.

My question (since all the others I had were already answered): Is Kill gonna change up the uniforms?

changing uniforms is a two year process!

changing uniforms is a two year process!

Is that something he said, or is that something you just said? lol

If it's something that he said.. Awesome. Means that he'll look to put his stamp on our ever evolving uniform.

He said uniforms are planned a long way out - can't make any changes at this point for 2011 fall. Doesn't really care what the uniforms look like - will leave that to others - cares about what is in the uniform.

Haha I typed it~ but there was discussion in the equipment room about this issue... and that was the answer. The decision will be up to Kill, but it is a two year process.

He said we're locked in by contract with Nike for 2011. The unis stay the same: "I'm more worried about the kid in the uniform". What a guy!

I thought I read somewhere that the U was going with another vendor in 2012. Anyone?
