I'll preface this post by saying I'm happy we've moved on and look forward to supporting our new coach. However, as much as it's clear Brewster was in over his head, I believe he did a few things very well that I appreciated:

1. Never took sh*t or backed down from Bielema.

2. Expressed an undying enthusiasm for Gopher Football and reminded us all to 'dream big'.

3. Focused a ton of energy and effort on recruiting.

Please don't get into more Brewster bashing and I don't think we need to get into the "well yeah, but he never actually BEAT Wisconsin" or "his enthusiasm was his undoing" talk. True as all of that may be, save it for a different thread.

So, in your opinion, what was the BEST thing Coach Brewster brought to the U? If "other", please explain...

Tremendous energy...

In all seriousness, I liked his enthusiasm. I also thought he did a fair job of disciplining players and he clearly improved the academic standing of the team, a very difficult task for a new coach.

At the time, his positive attitude and energy were things that the U desperately needed. He did have some success with recruiting. It is unfortunate he could not get some stability on the coaching staff.

Though he was in over his head, at the same time with proper ascension in the coaching ranks, he may very well get another HC gig. Not out of the question.

I agree. I think he'll get another job some day. He was just in WAY over his head. He couldn't keep any consistency with his staff and in time I think that contributed as much to the program's troubles than anything. I do think in time at a smaller program he could be a decent coach. Unfortunately for us, he just wasn't ready.

I enjoyed his "Hot Chili" and "Get Some/Bring Some" sayings... they didn't do anything but entertain....but it was good entertainment!

I also appreciated his efforts at reminding people of the great history Minnesota has in college football....

Brewer was a sucky coach but he was positive and I think he worked hard at it. Seemed like a nice guy too. Maybe could make a decent OC or something like that someplace but he's clearly not Division I HC material.

I give Coach Brewster a lot of credit for creating a higher level of interest in Gopher football. Sure TCF helped tremendously but he kept on beating the drum and was not bashful in preaching that there is no reason why the Gophers can not compete for a BT crown and get to the Rose Bowl. He did not back down and I believe he really believed it!!

Coach Brewster was hired to do three things. Improve the image of Gopher football statewide, improve recruiting and win big and often. I think he did pretty well with the first two but we all know his downfall. Brewster he made a ton of gaffs on the coaching side but it was not for a lack of effort, enthusiasm or vision.

"It's real. It's raw. Sometimes it's real raw."

Loved the passion; he really bought into the program. You can call him a snake oil salesman all you want, but in his mind he really was doing all he could to bring us an authentic product, and he wasn't trying to pull the wool over our eyes. I'll remember his tenure for the things he did well off the field. Oh, and he didn't leave the cupboard bare.

Even though the save gopher football guys were obviously not invited, I liked that he that annual get together for the former players. The fish fry with all the high school coaches. That ladies event seemed to be very popular.

I liked the optimism and liked hearing the idea that we could compete for a conference championship. I believe that he did a great job or reinvigorating the program within the state. His record on graduations rates and disipline was strong and I think he was a good guy. I also like the fact that he tried to beef up the schedule.

I liked that he got involved with the alumni players. It is great to see Bobby Bell support the team publicly. Cant figure out why the past coaches never tapped into the alumni players.

im a salesman, and i was sold on him.... i cant pick one of thoes 3 features because he was masterful at them all....

but as they say, "a salesman is the easiest sell"

Ol Brew............he set the bar so low that ANY coach can come in here and look like the next coming of Vince Lombardi.

Ah I will always miss the coordinator carousel and the "what offense are we going to run THIS year" game. The annual laughter of opponents saying how on Earth did we ever hire this guy and they hope he is around forever. But the best thing about Brew seriously was he was best at the things Mason was bad at like really working hard at recruiting, building bridges with the high school coaches and placing an importance on our tradition.

One last thing about Brew -- it IS true that he left this program in better shape than Mason did -- there is still a lot of talent here that he left behind.

At the time he was hired, I thought he was exactly what we needed; a high energy guy with a reputation for recruiting. In the end, I think what I loved most was the way he embraced the rich history of the program and helped to reconnect people to that storied past. Love him or hate him, he poured a lot of sweat into the program and tried to get this thing turned around. Just didn't work out.

Brew did everything right but win games. His positivity and focus on past gophers was great. His aiming high was great. His willingness to suspend players even when he was coaching for his job was admirable. His raising the academic success rates at the U are appreciated and very important. He did a great job of keeping the majority of minn kids away from wi and ia, and in fact kept most of them home. He engaged the high schools. He did everything the right way, unfortunately he wasn't a very good coach. So it goes.

No coach I've ever seen has set the bar so high in one respect (expectations), and so low in another (wins).

Brew, if you are reading this, you will get no hard feelings from me. I've never doubted that you gave your absolute best to this university. That is a whole lot more than most people associated with the U.

Everything he did was great outside of winning games. Probably had something to do with his X's and O's abilities, but whatever.

I loved the passion he had for our team. That takes the cake.

Playing against USC instead of teams like Mason use to schedule. I hope the new coach continues tougher scheduling.
The locker room will always be in his memory, after all he designed it.
