Offensive line update

The Gophers are thin along the offensive line after losing eight players from last year’s unit, including three starters.

“There’s one group in there that we’re making progress with, but one group’s not enough,” Claeys said. “With the injuries, we’ve got to get the other guys going, too.”

Matt Limegrover had double duty when he was the team’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Now Bart Miller works exclusively as the offensive line coach.

“He’s with them all the time,” Claeys said. “He’s not worried about calling plays, and I think that’s a tough job for an offensive line coach to call plays and coach up there. So I think the kids have enjoyed having [Miller] around. We’ve got some work to do still, but he’s doing a good job with some changes that we’ve made technique wise. And we will play more physical.”

Go Gophers!!

Nice to see that the cliché season is in full swing.

Being more physical would be great and it's a good P.R. statement. Hope that they also have figured out a way to keep them healthy too. Injuries killed the whole team all last season. It seems as if injuries over the last 3-4 games has killed them for years now.

Physically. Society for the retention of adverbs.

No mention of Nasty? Disappointed.

I'm sure this has been posted somewhere, but curious how many lineman we lost this off season could have stayed another year. 2?, 3?

We are not the kind of program that can absorb that kind of thing without any issues I don't think.

I've wondered if not having a full time OL coach resulted in poor technique and then poor technique resulted in more injuries. I'm hoping that by having a full time coach we have be have less injuries due to better technique.

Hence why we signed a couple JUCOs

I believe those that are the aggressor and more physical are less likely to get hurt. It keeps you out of vulnerable positions.

Lauer, Bobek, Hayes and Alex Mayes all had eligibility left.

Thanks gophmeister. Man that hurts. That would hurt any team, but a team that needs to depend on developing players over 3,4 years before they start will really feel that. If our line plays better this year than last, that will really say something about the coaching, last year and this year.

Yeah I know why, I was more or less asking how many guys we lost that could have stayed.
Hayes, Lauer for sure and I think Bobek. Hayes would not have played and I think Lauer figured out his knee was never going to be dependable again either. Bobek had so many health issues for the amount he got to play that my guess is he just was not willing to go through it to mostly watch again.
So we lost three guys we had put years of development into and could not contribute.

Bobek didn't have any eligibility left, unless he somehow would've been able to get another medical waiver. Lauer and Mayes still had eligibility but essentially retired due to injury. In terms of guys who could've stayed and contributed in 2016, Hayes was the only "healthy scratch" and I doubt he'd have been anything more than depth.

Bobek got the waiver but I think he decided he had enough of school having completed his Masters.
