Change at kicker?

Ryan Santoso made 17 of 21 field goal attempts and all 31 extra points last year, but with Peter Mortell graduated, Santoso could be moving to punter.

Sophomore Emmit Carpenter made all four field goal kicks Saturday — from 26, 31, 23 and 40 yards. The Gophers didn’t do any punts, but Santoso easily has the strongest leg on the team.

“I was really pleased with [Carpenter],” Claeys said. “It may get into a thing where Ryan does the longer [field goals] and punts, and Emmit does [shorter field goals]. We’ll have the rest of fall camp to get that figured out.”

Go Gophers!!

It's a reasonable solution for filling the vacant punting position. I'm like Coach Claeys, I don't like the idea, of having one player punt and kick field goals.

Curious. Why not? Neither one is the most demanding position.

Don't get this one either.

My guess would be so he can specialize. It's a different type of kick between field goals and punting. Every minute spent practicing field goals is one you aren't practicing punting and vice versa. Maybe wouldn't make a huge difference, but that'd be my guess why.

Hard to debate that. Thanks.

You have to make the short putts before you can make the longer ones. Wouldn't it apply to field goals also in game settings?

The only reasons I can think of is because they like the other kicker and want him to stick around. Or leg fatigue worries with Santoso doing both.

Lloyd did both if I remember correctly

I don't like the idea of one injury taking out two positions.

I hate the idea of one guy doing both. Disappointing that they don't have a punter who can punt it better than Santoso. Punting is very difficult to be proficient at, I would argue much more so than place kicking, and typically the punter gets many more chances in a game than meaningful PK attempts.

Not crazy about the idea of one guy for short kicks and one for the longer ones either, but that's an entirely different discussion altogether

Based on what?

I've watched him punt many times. I think he could be pretty good.

Let's just not punt, go for it every fourth down :)

As long as it goes between the posts I could care less who kicks it.

When Carpenter hit his field goals on Saturday I looked at my buddy and said "ooh - kicker controversy!!". We both laughed.

Who knew?

Rhys Lloyd did do both. He was pretty solid at both, also.

I guess either way you have to have a good backup at both positions. And since Santoso was the backup P last year, it's not like he wasn't (or won't be) spending time during practice doing it this year.

Really the biggest concern is that you're increasing the risk of your placekicker getting hurt. But kickers and punters get hurt fairly rarely, so I don't think it's a big issue.

I guess I want the best kicker and the best punter out there. If that's Santoso for both, fine. If it's Carpenter and Santoso? Great. If it's two players to be named later, so be it.

I am a little disappointed they didn't at least punt with no return. I thought it would have been nice to see both Santoso and the backup punt to see what we're dealing with...
