Unless it's the guy from Houston, Temple, or Memphis, who has a better resume than Claeys? IMO Claeys can be put in a pool with any other Non-P5 HC and he's just as good a hire.

Not sure it "tops many" but all things considered it is a good idea to let him drive the bus for a while.

There's really not much resume science in terms of hiring a coordinator to be a HC as far as knowing what the outcome will be... so I'm not sure if you could quantify a "top" resume that it would mean much.

This is why I like the idea of naming Claeys HC at a 5 year contract with a low buyout. Obviously if he proves to be capable we extend him and increase the buyout in the future. After Brewster we can't risk giving Claeys, who has only been an assistant, a Jerry Kill like buyout.

Yeah I agree. Give Claeys a contract, he shouldn't be expensive, make sure the assistants and everyone are on the same schedule. See how the Co. from Kill and Co. do and go from there.

Yeah but ....does Claeys have a "Rebecca"?

I like Claeys as a defensive coordinator, and think he's done a good job during his tenure at Minnesota. That said I vehemently disagree with the original poster that Claeys resume tops many. If this job was open at the end of the year, and Claeys had the exact same resume at some other school there's zero chance he'd be considered for the Minnesota job. Only 5 years at a power 5 school? Never was better than 5-3 in conference play and an overall losing record in conference play over 5 years? Team has just one win over a top 25 team? Recruiting at/near the bottom of the conference most years? Best years in total defense were middle of the pack (6th in 2013 out of 12, 7th in 2014 out of 14)? That resume looks extremely weak.

Compare Claeys to someone like Paul Chryst (who allegedly was considered by Maturi when Kill was hired) and remember how virtually nobody wanted anything to do with Chryst? Someone like Jim McElwain went from winning National Titles and having undefeated conference seasons as an OC for Alabama to the head coaching job at Colorado State.

None of this is to say Minnesota shouldn't hire Claeys or that he won't do a good job. I do feel like it's much more of a risk right now than many posters seem to acknowledge. Luckily, we can test drive Claeys as head coach until the end of the year which mitigates that risk somewhat.
