Claeys making one excuse after another for Ayinde

Why do you only show up and post after losses?

I'd be more upset if TC called him out in that presser. He can deal with #4 in practice and with playing time - why would he let all the other F'ups off the hook in the press conference?

His job is to protect his players.

As bad as Ayinde played (and he played terribly), it wouldn't have accomplished anything to have Claeys rip him just for being bad. If a coach is going to call out a player publicly, I want it to be for doing something stupid and selfish, not just for being a bad defensive back.

Agreed. And Ayinde isn't the only problem. The defensive backs, except for Travis, are a pretty marginal group this year. Even a veteran like Myrick still has some issues. There's a reason why the Gophers have given up the most passing yards per game in the conference despite playing one of the weaker schedules in the conference to date.

What other option do they have? If they had someone better than Ayinde, he would be playing

Not really. Any of McGhee, Winfield, or Huff is a better choice. They use a lot of rotations throughout the D, and they just needed to shorten up the rotation and leave out Ayinde, at least until he gets his head straight. He had one of the worst games by a Gopher that I can remember, and had no business being on the field in the decisive moments.

What was Claeys supposed to do? Rip a 21 year old kid in front of the all of us and the rest of the team? Man, what a crappy precedence that would set.

This kid came in under tough circumstances last year and did a damn decent job, all things considered. I didn't see anyone outworking him at practices this fall either, often staying afterwards for extra work. Learn, improve and move forward.
