9-2? 10-2? if he hits either of these records MN fans will begin to beat the SCHOOL X wants Claeys. This season Franklin has made the jump.

Let's just beat Nebraska. Obviously if a coach starts winning 9 or 10 games here they will get some looks. Losing someone like Sawvel would be catastrophic IMO.

Claeys may turn out to be a good technical coach - but when you're talking about moving up the coaching ladder, image matters. Claeys may be the nicest guy in the world, but he looks like someone who should be hanging out at the feed store. He just doesn't have the charisma that people associate with big-time coaches. And yes, the weight is an issue.

He would have to rattle off a string of really big seasons - 10 wins or more 3 or 4 years in a row - to have a legitimate chance to move up to a higher-profile position.

I think that we are stuck with each other for at least a year. Clayes has performed pretty well, but in many ways, people still see the Gophers as Jerry's team. Letting Claeys go after a year in which he performed pretty well would be seen as unfair and hurt our prospects in finding a replacement. Sawvel will not get many looks as a first year DC. It's after next year that dynamics change for Clayes, for Sawvel, it's after the third year.

Other than Holtz, I would like nothing more than to have others after our head coach. That would be a nice problem for a change.

Prepare to be vilified for rationality.
