Dear Santa,
I've been a good fan again this year and should be on your nice list. Here's my Christmas transfer portal wish list. Please bring everything.

1. An experienced and talented hitter. Don't want to have to rely on a freshman next year.
2. An experienced setter. Not to replace or even compete with Stella. Just for depth.
3. A big middle. Let's see some 6-4 or bigger blockers on our front line for once.

I don't think any of this is too much to ask. Please please please......

Hoolie,
I hope you have been good this year otherwise Santa can't grant your wish. Santa has seen the Gophers play and thinks that they also need a couple of outstanding defensive players, too. The teams in the elite eight receive, dig, pass, and claw for points exceptionally well. Santa will try to grant your wishes because he/she is pessimistic that the existing players will elevate their games like Hanson did.
Merry Christmas,
Santa

Thanks Santa, er Walleye. I'd love that too but I didn't want to be greedy. I'm hoping for improvement from Thibault, Baby Z, and Acevedo. This was the first year of extended play from all 3. They deserve the chance to grow.

I find the portal talk fascinating. Why do people support specific volleyball programs (aside from proximity)? Are we just cheering for a uniform and it doesn't matter who wears it? Or does the uniform magically transform a player into one worth cheering for?

I am not interested in mercenaries, but I am even less interested in supporting a program that is all in on hiring them. How the hell can one be a Badger fan these days, just for instance?

Now one could make the argument that the sport is the only thing that matters and watching excellent volleyball is what the spectator really wants. That's fine. Just don't give me any crap about how "special" your program is. You absolutely cannot have it both ways. Kelly Sheffield should be ashamed. KSC should be. She is destroying Rose's legacy imo. John Cook should be, too, because he doesn't have to do it that way, the hypocrite.

Do I sound bitter? Good. I have no problem with players who transfer so they can play. Or because of a coaching change. But starters who jump ship? THAT'S who you want to cheer for??

Not a bad post Ruffda. No offense but I think you're living in the past a little bit. I don't blame you, I long for the good old days of college athletics too. The reality is college sports are really professional sports now. It's all about money for the schools. How else do you explain a conference that has teams scattered from LA to Jersey. The travel time for the "student athletes" is insane. For the conference all that matters is pulling in teams in big media markets so BTN makes more money. Now NIL has changed the players into employees who are free to sell their services to the highest bidder. So yes they are probably mercenaries but anyone who's ever left a job for more money somewhere else should understand. At the end of the day we probably are just cheering for the jersey like withe the Vikes or the Twins. It takes some of the joy out of it but that's the world we live in.

Oh, no doubt there's a new reality. I just don't happen to like it.

And it doesn't get at the central issue: What exactly are we cheering for? Sure, you can say the same about pro sports, but THAT'S A MAJOR FLAW IN PRO SPORTS. It's that the owners think we will cheer for the uniform. And, unfortunately, many of us do. (See this year's edition of the Vikings.) But college sports is supposed to be something different. I, for one, am not going to be fooled.

I am going to through a little rain into the snow mix here. I personally don't see a TOP player in the portal (one that most people would consider that type of player) committing to Minnesota til after the Championships are over. I'm sure in many cases a decision has already been made and probably a few conversations too.

I just feel in reality that the Gopher program will now begin their building next season. Pretty hard to convince a TOP player to transfer here. Especially, if they are looking at wanting the chance of winning a Natty say in their Final year of college. Unfortunately, we are not at the same level as Nebraska, Wisconsin and Penn State. Yes we once were and, hopefully, we will get back there in the next few years.

We will land a Portal Player or two but not necessarily who we have on our Christmas List. I think the position that could be filled first is MB. IMO Pedro is the real deal as an Assistant MB coach and all anybody needs to do is look at the players who have played under his leadership and their improved game play....that does includes Booth as a Freshman.

Now I could be all full of hot air and way off base and, truthfully, I hope I am. One thing for sure, time will tell.

Ruffda I feel for you. What you want sounds great. Sadly it just doesn't exist. I was going to suggest you just start watching youth sports but that's not even pure anymore. Those little shi%# and their parents are all delusional as hell. Half of them are mercenaries too, chasing championship teams or more playing time. So, sorry my friend, I have nothing to offer you.
