Per Lucas Trickle:

"Wayzata linebacker Chris Wipson has committed to Minnesota. #Gophers"

A Rivals Top 10 in MN (#6). He appears to be a smart kid with an offer from Air Force. This is a nice get by Coach Kill & Co.

Welcome Chris!

Go Gophers!

Rivals 2-Star rating - Air Force best offer.

Rivals 2-Star rating

I am typically of the opinion that recruiting rankings can be a good indicator of ability. That being said...

Based on his film, I am a HUGE fan of this kid and think the rating is way off. Here is what I like:

- He is very active and gets sideline to sideline.
- He is not afraid of contact.
- His tackling form is excellent.
- When he gets to the ballcarrier, he does not try to wrestle the guy down. He accelerates THROUGH the ballcarrier every time. This is one of the biggest things I look for on film.
- He does not quit on plays.
- He played the pass well and showed athleticism in space.
- I don't particularly care about what his 40 time is. He plays faster than the other guys on the field.

What needs to improve?

- I did not see many examples of him shedding blocks. Increased strength and technique work will help with this.
- There were a couple instances where he got caught with both feet in the air. He was athletic enough to make the play, but he will need to avoid that at the next level.
- He obviously needs to (and will) get bigger at the next level.

I like Wipson's film as much as or more than any Gopher LB recruit in the last two years. He had a good junior season; I am betting he will have a huge senior year. I am also betting his star rating will increase, which will make him look better on paper. The kid can play, and I am excited about the commitment.

I agree, I have been impressed with the video I have seen. Welcome aboard!!

I enjoy your posts TBNL, and your blog as well. You should post more if possible.

This kid looks great on film. How big is he? Obviously will need to put on some weight, but his football instincts are NICE.

I appreciate it! The problem with posting in the offseason is that there is very little actual football talk. I follow the recruiting and use the 'Hole to keep up with developments, but I don't have a ton I want to add to the rest of the conversations. Looking at film is fun, however, which is yet another reason I am hoping for more commitments soon.

He just wanted to type Neu-troll for the 100th time. He tends to repeat his new jokes.

Excellent analysis! I'm really impressed by his game speed. Give him some time to bulk up, and he should be a nice strong side linebacker. LB is a position of need and we are able to fill one of the slots with a local kid. Nice pick-up.

I was more of a Cotrell fan last season, but given the staff's emphasis on speed I can see why they went with Chris. Either way, I was hoping we would add at least one of them, so this is nice to see. Welcome, Chris.

We have a choice of two experts here in evaluating Wipson. One is our Iowa troll who would say he can't be any good because he is rated two stars and the other is To be named later who actual has done an evaluation. Who should we trust?

nuetroll. Inability to spell obviously proves he is an expert at football.

Well said. Appreciate the analysis. Like I have said earlier, Kill knows what kind of player he is recruiting. Don't judge Wipson based on the number of stars he has (as a junior), judge him based on his production wearing the maroon and gold.

Yes because two star players win Big Ten Championships! Don't get me wrong a couple a recruiting class isn't that bad but you can't build a Big Ten 500. team with two star recruits rather you like it or not.

Dumbest thing I've ever read. Ratings don't matter if the kid can play.

Good analysis TBNL....

I've seen Wipson play a couple times and I definitely think he is a Big 10 caliber LB. In style of play, he reminded me of Clay Mathews (i'm not comparing him to Clay Mathews in ability, I am comparing him in style). His tape makes him look like more of a traditional type LB, but in the two games that I saw him play, he really seemed to cause a lot of havoc near the line of scrimmage. More than being a pass rushing LB (which he is not), he reminded me of Mathews in just how often you saw him running around the ball. He's a really good HS LB, the best HS LB I've seen in some time in MN (right there with Cottrell).

Keep in mind that I missed a lot of LB prospects (Maxx Williams in HS, Westerhaus, I'm sure that I am missing someone), but Wipson REALLY stands out when you watch Wayzata play. I think in real life, he is even more impressive than his film demonstrates. Whatever you want to call Nick Rallis in HS (LB or S), I prefer Wipson to him as a player. I liked Wipson quite a bit more than Drake Michaelson (EP OLB who got a few BCS offers.

In another thread a few months ago, I posted about how I really wanted Wipson and Cottrell and if I had to pick, it would be Cottrell. I still stand by that comment, but it is more because I see Cottrell as an obvious Big 10 MLB. He has a much larger frame than Wipson. But I am pumped about about getting this kid as well.

So, in my novice opinion, Wipson is a good get.

I generally agree with you, but in this case I genuinely think Wipson is criminally underrated. I'm not even going to give you the "Kill will coach him up" line; I just think Wipson is good. I will be VERY surprised if his star rating does not go up by signing day.

In my experience, the way a kid plays relative to the other guys on the field is a good indicator of future ability. The fact is that Wipson stands out for a number of different reasons. If you go to a Wayzata game next year, he will just plain look like the best player on the field. That is not always where the analysis ends, but that is certainly where it starts.

My guess is that Kill waited until camp to give the offer because he wanted to see if that trait was only there on film, or if it carried over to when the kid was playing against other motivated competitors at the camp. I'm guessing he played the same way at camp, thus earning the offer.

When it comes to in state players that the coaches offer after seeing them at camp, the star rating is basically meaningless. The coaches have the best network on in state kids, the best chance to evaluate them and usually a chance to see them up close at camp.

Rivals is not going to give kids in Minnesota any credit, except for the obvious kids that are being heavily recruited by multiple BCS teams until the Gophers start winning games. When that starts to happen, the two star kids getting offers will suddenly be three stars. I have seen it happen with Wisconsin kids and the same thing can happen with Minnesota kids. Eventually, after the lower rated Minnesota players form the back bone of winning teams, Rivals will catch on and they will start a larger number of prospects in the State with three stars. It is a simple fact of the recruiting game.

Don't underestimate the kids with tremendous heart and character who have a huge desire to be Gophers, even if they are two stars or walk on. Those are the kids that will be doing everything that the fans don't see to help turn the program around.

I don't care what anyone says, you need a generation of kids, especially from the Twin Cities, dying to be Gophers. That is going to be the ticket. As much as I would love the Badgers get the kid from Washburn, it would be great if he chose Minnesota. One highly ranked, skill position guy that has 15 BCS offers has to turn the tide. I hope it is Jones.

some arrows identifying him in that film would be nice...i had trouble tracking where he was lined up before the play started. That said...he does play fast and aggressive. Nice get, Jerry.
