Chris Streveler's historical snap as NFL QB

If my Gopher QB history is correct, we have had only two former Gopher QB's take a snap as an NFL QB in the history of our program. The first was former Gopher QB Mike Hohensee who's only snaps were when he crossed the picket line during the strike season in 1987, and now Chris Streveler who took his first NFL snap this past week. And as irony would have it, the first non-strike QB to take a snap happened with a former QB who we turned into a WR and who had to transfer to a smaller level school to remain at QB.

It looks like MarQueis Gray did attempt 1 pass in 2017. I'm not sure if that was a designed end-around for the TE or a broken play and he just chucked the ball, which would not qualify as taking a snap as an NFL QB.

Really hoping that Morgan can break this really odd streak we have.

Ok kill plays streveler instead of Fraudner. We win a few more games and still have Jerry kill and his coaches. Hooray.

Since this just came up this week, I did some research and there are a couple more.

Spergon Wynn (who later transferred to SW Texas) took snaps for the Gophers in 1996 and then started a game in place of Ponder at Green Bay in 2001. I guess since we count Streveler, then Wynn counts as a former Gopher as well.

Cory Sauter played in 1 game and took snaps for the Bears in 2002.
 

So what this really means is, we've never had a QB who started the majority of our games in a season, then go on to take (legit) QB snaps in the NFL.

Would guess that is also true for a fair number of P5 schools?

I'm not sure if winning more games would have had anything to do with it.

Unless we are going full on butterfly effect, Kill stepped down because of health and Claeys was canned after winning 9 games. I doubt they win more than 9 games that year with Claeys and co., with or without Streveler.

Streveler sure seemed like he would have been a fun guy to watch play though.
 


It amazes me the Adam Weber never got a shot of taking a snap in the NFL.

Streveler has a degree from here, Wynn does not.

I assume Coyle cans Tracy even if they eek out wins vs Penn State and Iowa and make the title game.
 











Another (potential) one is Bill Garnaas, though he played in the 1940s and I'm not sure if he technically played QB in the NFL.
 



Didn’t Chris have a hand injury his freshman year at the U, delaying his development as a QB?
 

At this time in 2016 Philip Nelson was starting at East Carolina over .........Gardner Minshew. Oh what could have been

In recent memory it makes sense. Both Mason and Kill were run focused with Maroney, Barber, Russell, Kirkwood, Cobb, Brooks and Smith. I think as a result our quarterbacks have been more complimentary to the running game.

Over the last few decades, after quarterbacks leave the U they're usually at a sort of "minor league" tier below the NFL.
Rickey Foggie - CFL and AFL
Marquel Fleetwood - CFL
Cory Sauter - NFL backup
Assad Abdul-Khaliq - AFL
Adam Weber NFL and CFL practice squads

I'm really interested to see where Tanner could end up a few years from now.

Going back farther Gino Cappelletti was a CFL quarterback and later a wide reciver and kicker for the Patriots.
