Chris, just wanted to ask you about the comment (below) in your article. I've heard this mentioned by Sid a lot, are there guys that defected that we have not heard about? Looking at the roster and the new recruits I see 2 open scholarships? Thanks

Not to mention that ALL players need to keep their academics in order to remain eligible.
 

Sid is Confused

I expect Sid came to his conclusion on the lack of scholarship players from a comment that Jerry Kill made during Sunday’s Sport Huddle program. When Dave Mona asked Jerry what would the format be for the spring game, Jerry replied he hoped the spring game in two or three years would be a “celebrity coach” game but it will be a controlled scrimmage this year due to lack of depth.

My analysis would indicate that presently Minnesota has 83 players on scholarship, including Drayquan Crawford but excluding 2012 verbals. I also believe the roster count for 2011 stands at 120 plus, so it is not a numbers problems but a depth problem. This of course assumes that there is no loss through academics or for other reasons.
 

Sid has consistently mentioned this winter that the Gophers are well under the 85 scholarship limit; this was before Kill's recent comments about lack of depth with the spring game scenario.

Now that Chris also mentions it I am just hoping there weren't defections the public just doesn't know about yet. It also could be Sid babbling about something that isn't true.

If there were defections they would be deleted from the official roster located below. We probably won't know if there are academic casualties until spring semester is over.

Kill also mentioned that they have a couple of scholarships left. Their plan is to wait until spring practice to see if they need to fill any holes before signing anybody. If not they will carry the scholarships forward to 2012. This blog is becoming notorious for grabbing hold of rumors and comments and making them into facts. Would they be deleted from the Roster? I see a bunch of stuff in there that needs to be updated. Kill mentioned they have a couple scholarships left for this year, meaning they have a couple spots to sign people under the 25 limit (Sports Huddle); as we have signed 23 student athletes at this point.

Also, I am asking for clarification, not attempting to make any assumption into a fact. Given that we have not heard of any defections I'm pretty confident there aren't any; however, Sid has been constantly mentioning it and now Chris even mentions it, so I think it's worth the question.

I believe he has 25 signed assuming Crawford finishes up his course work (I believe the transferring kicker counts).

According to Dave Lee this morning, Sid turns 91 today.

Last fall, I think it was before the Ill game, Sid was saying the Gophers only dressed 50 some players for the game due to injuries, departures and academics. This could be what is in the back of Sid's mind.

As far as the roster, they have done a much better job this year of keeping it current. For example they deleted Crawford from the roster, changed Green from a senior to a junior, changed Beal from a junior to a sophmore, and added Xzavian Brandon to the roster. I did notice though that Kim Royston is not on the roster. I thought he was there before but I may be wrong.

As far as the the limit of 25 new recruits per year, JC transfers who enrolled this spring semester do not go against the 25 max but they do go against the 85 maximum total scholarships. It is a little difficult to determine who is on scholarship but my estimate is that we have 83 when Crawford and Royston are included. This leaves 2 scholarships that are still available.

Lastly, I understand your confusion after what has been said and written about this. I think I was particularly reacting to the number of people continuing to not understand Gopher Radio Network.

Royston doesn't count, he is a walk-on.

Intra-conference transfers in the Big Ten cannot receive financial assistance from their new school, regardless of circumstances. Royston earned a scholarship a long time ago, but he cannot receive one by rule.

No. Intra-conference transfers. Inter-conference transferees can do so with impunity.

Correct. The fancy word "intra" means he transferred from within the big 10 (Wiskey). Beal didn't come from the big 10, so no problem. (Thanks again to Royston's family for covering the cost of Kim's schooling as a Gopher.)
 



Actually, it's only beacuse Bulimia refused to release him from his Budgie scholarship, and has yet to. If he had, Royston could have received a schollie after sitting out the year.

Intra-conference transfers are restricted from receiving aid once they transfer to the new school, regardless of the circumstances. Waivers can be granted in special cases (see Ben Brust, 2nd link below), but they are rare and would certainly not have been granted in this case.
