per Chip:

The 12-member committee charged with selecting four teams to play in the inaugural College Football Playoff will release its first rankings on Tuesday.

In other words, fans of teams outside the initial top four will get their first chance to freak out.

Don’t worry, we get six shots to pick apart resumes — and the committee’s decision-making — before the final rankings are released Dec. 7.

Let’s save energy and pace ourselves. Everything will be turned upside down and back again between now and then. That’s the beauty of college football.

Go Gophers!!

Dan Wetzel says releasing these polls is a bad idea.

It's late October, so who the committee puts at the top doesn't matter. There are plenty of games yet to be played.

Which four teams are picked now matters about as much as whom is leading a 100-meter dash after 60 meters … when Usain Bolt is just getting up to speed.

Still, completely rejecting outside opinion isn't easy and that's one of the reasons why releasing a weekly top-25 poll is such a bad idea.

MSU likely #7 or #8?

My guess is Michigan State will come in at #7 or #8 in the initial poll. Any lower than that and I'll be mildly surprised.

Definitely ahead of MSU (5): Alabama, Florida State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Oregon

Perhaps ahead of MSU (5): Arizona, Auburn, Georgia, Notre Dame, TCU

Should be behind MSU (6): Arizona State, Baylor, Kansas State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Utah

I'd put Notre Dame in the "definitely" column. Because, Notre Dame.
