They didn’t want to leave the field. Not after a win that felt defining in nature and a season best described as special. So they lingered long after the game had ended to celebrate and enjoy one final moment together.

Especially the seniors. They probably would have camped out all night at Raymond James Stadium if allowed. They have experienced so much turmoil and personal challenges the past five years that their elation was something to savor. As one of them noted afterward, “Mission accomplished.” Indeed.

The perception of Gophers football changed in 2019. The first day of a new year validated the program’s rise to relevancy.

A commanding 31-24 win over Auburn in the Outback Bowl served as an exclamation point on an 11-win season and sent notice that P.J. Fleck’s program can compete with college football’s big boys.

“If you want to be a blue blood,” Fleck said, “you’ve got to beat blue bloods.”

The Gophers didn’t just beat Auburn, they throttled them statistically and in coaching acumen, leaving no doubt about which team was superior. The manner in which the Gophers took the fight to their opponent will reverberate nationally because Auburn’s resume included a win over Alabama and a three-point loss at LSU, along with one of the stingiest defenses nationally.

This win will get people’s attention. Eleven wins with a dominating performance against a highly regarded SEC team should remove any remaining skepticism about the Gophers’ soft schedule. They are legit, plain and simple. And they will begin next season as a Top 15 team.

“We’re doing everything we possibly can to make this a championship program,” Fleck said. “We want to change people’s thoughts, ideas and mindset. This is one game, one win. [But] it shows where we can go. It shows what we’re capable of doing, but it doesn’t guarantee anything. You have to go earn it every single day.”

Go Gophers!!

Coach Fleck. Always with a poignant look to the big picture.

This is the plain truth, and it's something that Minnesota fans are finally beginning to understand.

If we can play at this level, beating a solid Auburn team in a New Year's Day bowl game and pretty much dominating them in the process, then there's nothing we can't accomplish.

It's time to raise our expectations, Gopher fans.

But I was told by some on the twitter that these bowl games are meaningless. Yeah they're meaningless in terms of not having an affect on the National Championship but they certainly are meaningful to the programs and fans.

Fixed it for you.

I do think a lot of pundits over rate bowl games in how they project forward to the next season, but I 100% agree that bowl games mean the world to fans and can really help sell the program to future recruits.

I had the Paul Finebaum show (SEC Network) on in the background while working yesterday. Finebaum is known not to pull punches. When the Auburn/Minnesota subject came up, he and his producers matter-of-factly commented that Minnesota was a good team and physically won the battle. There were no reactions of huge surprise. The producers even threw out that maybe Minnesota should pass Alabama in the rankings (huge deal since Finebaum is a self professed Alabama guy). There's no question that bowl games like this can change the national perspective.

On a side note, when a caller to the show commented that Alabama "finally" had a signature win for the year over Michigan, Finebaum retorted that it wasn't a signature win because Michigan was the 5th best team in the conference. Loved it.

I think we can all agree that our performance in last year's bowl game had a very positive effect on this past offseason and the team's confidence going into this season. Sure, we had ugly games early, but when it came to "winning time" on those games, nobody was scared of the moment.

For sure. But beating a well-know, accomplished program like Auburn is a big deal from a national perspective for someone like Minnesota. And the players certainly don't think it's meaningless.

There was someone on twitter trying to tell me bowl games are just like preseason games in the NFL.
