Per Chip:

Freshman Drake Lindsey has been the team’s best player heading into Saturday’s trophy game at Iowa. That’s not an exaggeration. The No. 1 question mark heading into the season has not been a concern at all.

The young guy was more than ready for the assignment.

“Show me three Big Ten quarterbacks who are having more of an impact on their team than him,” former Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan said.

Go Gophers!!

He has been good, especially for a first year player. However he is ranked in the bottom half of the Big Ten in most passing stats, I know he has been hurt but IMO Darius Taylor is our best player. Part of it IMO is that the country had low expectations for him.

I have been happy with his performance and am not taking anything away from it. He has the potential to be one of the better QB's MN has had in a long time.

Indiana, OSU and Illinois QB's have had larger impacts easily this year, along with the USC and Oregon QB's too. I guess you could argue their teams would be good with anyone at QB though...

Drake is definitely not playing like a redshirt freshman in his first season as a starter.

His stats don't jump off the page but one thing he is doing a great job of is protecting the football. He rarely puts it up for grabs or makes those ill advised throws so many QBs make.

Exciting to think that the best is still to come for him as he continues to develop and get experience. He is far from a finished product.

He is doing very well for a Freshman. I think there are only two other freshman starting QBs in the Big Ten and I would say he's at least as good as they are.

I agree with you 100%. I am excited to see him hopefully progress.

Depends on the stats you are pulling from, experience and team they play on.

Lindsey and OL are 10th in sacks at 9. That is tied with Iowa for reference. Illinois has 23 sacks and Nebraska have 25. Rutger 21.

TD to INT ratio is 10 to 3. That is good for upper half.

These are huge for this offense that is trying to find it's consistent running game.

QB RTG seems like a poor measure. Lindsey is 12th behind guys with 5TD to 5INTs.

Considering all factors, there are five QB's I'd probably take over him.

Also harder to pass if you aren't consistent in running game.

The Drake is Good

I do find my estimation of him interesting in that on the stats boards he isn't high up there and I think of him as much higher. We've had to REALLY rely on him some games ... and he has come through.

Team could have 2 wins if not for The Drake.

I think QB Rating in college is a useless stat. You can play two cupcake games and it will boost an otherwise pretty meh rating the rest of the season.

I think TD/INT ratio and how many sacks they take that they shouldn't and yards, to a degree, are most important. Completion % is important too but that depends on the offensive scheme. In college it's easy to boost that by throwing a lot of short stuff that any QB at the college level should be good at.

Overall, I would say Drake is checking all the boxes. He can throw intermediate and deep balls fairly well. Takes care of the ball and is more than willing to take what's given rather than trying to force things to happen. And on top of that he sprinkles in some play making ability too.

Yards per pass is a valuable one, as is interception percentage and fumble/sacks. Less negative plays are just as important as many of the positive ones.

I agree he is checking the boxes IMO.

I would agree the stats get boosted against weak competition, and I would only look at how they do against major conference opponents to get a better comparison.

College Stats should change sacks from negative rushing to negative passing yards. This would change the yards per attempt and completion to show actuality, and be more realistic.

The college game used to be dominated by running QBs, no longer and the statistics should get with the times.

Agree that college should do it like NFL and count sack yardage against passing stats because sacks happen on passing plays.

I think that's a better idea, although I think counting them against anything that isn't clearly a designed run or designed pass is strange.

There are 3 tiers of teams: Elite (Ohio State), Average/Good (Buffalo, Cal, Rutgers, Purdue, Nebraska) and then Garbage (NW State). Each has to be viewed in its own lense. Against the Average/Good teams, which is where he needs to shine for Minnesota to have a chance, his stats are:

DRAKE
106 for 173, 1204 yards, 9 TD, 3 INT
61%
6.96 yards/attempt
240 yards/game

ATHAN's first year against similar foes
140 for 260, 1697 yards, 13 TD, 6 INT
54%
6.53 yards/attempt
170 yards/game

He’s certainly in the discussion. I think one could argue for Anthony Smith.
