Chicago Trib Says Taylor "Strong Candidate" For UIC HC Job

Selfishly, I hope he holds out for a "better" job but he certainly deserves the chance. There needs to be more HC opportunities for minority candidates if they are as qualified as Coach Taylor.

I am not sure it would be a bad thing for the staff to have a little turnover right now. Adding an assistant who has some great contacts in the midwest (Illinois and Michigan in particular) might be beneficial. It could be a win/win situation if Taylor gets the UIC job.

Always/Usually A Good Idea To Have Staff Changes

It brings fresh ideas to the coaching staff.

And Taylor DESERVES a HC opportunity.

The worst thing for the Gophers if VT gets the job is the timing. Losing a key assistant coach in late August makes it more difficult to find a really good replacement.

It can happen, but it isn't as easy.

If Taylor get the HC job, is there any chance Trent Tucker is added to the staff.

Nonsense. We need to get over our small-minded, simpleton provincialism and hire the best. In this case, someone who's recruited nationally and connected. The opportunity to be a hall of fame coaches top recruited should attract a good assistant.

Jimmy Williams?

Describe yourself that way if you like, but not me.

Shawn Finney (Maybe)

Assistant for Tubby at Tulsa, Georgia, and UK.

Helped recruit Top 15 classes in 1996 and 97 at Georgia, then Top 5 classes at UK in 1998 and 99 followed up by Top 10 class in 2000.

Maybe, who knows? He has 5 years of HC experience at Tulane also.

Two local names that could get consideration for the staff are former Gopher Ben Johnson, who is currently on Ben Jacobson's staff at Northern Iowa; as well as former Gopher Director of Operations, James Ware who is currently at Santa Clara.

Go Gophers!!

James Ware is a Hopkins grad too, seems very connected with MN HS hoops.

Big James Ware fan. He did a great job for the Gophers with ther camps and all-around promoting of the program. Has gotten good recruits at Utah St. and Santa Clara. He'd bee a good canidate for UIC and UM Assistant if Taylor gets the job.

Doew Ware have connections beyond Minnesota? He seems to have gotten some players from Minnesota to at least visit Santa Clara that are above that schools profile. My concern would be that his connections are limited to Minnesota and the west coast (where he gets mid major kids).

Having connections in Minnesota is a good thing. Being a good evaluator of talent also makes is a good quality to have. I think Ware is that. He's never given a MN kid any special treatment. He set the bar high as far as what MN kids he recruits. Also remember, Jirsa's last job was at a mid-major. Can't always start at the top.

FOT might have it right if things move with VT right now. I would think he'll want to fill it very quickly and, because of that, I can't imagine him going with someone who he doesn't have a relationship with.

That said, I don't love the idea. I want somebody who is going to do the heavy lifting, has good evaluation skills and measures his self-worth on recruiting and getting great players.

Your second paragraph describes Finney perfectly.
